| | | | |
REGIONAL -- Local law enforcement was on the lookout Friday for a man who allegedly attempted to abduct three girls at various locations in the Shelby County area. And after an investigation over the weekend and help from the public, authorities arrested 64-year-old Mac Elliot Nelson of Cherokee. He is charged with attempted enticement of a minor and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. Both charges are aggravated misdemeanors carrying a maximum sentence of four years in jail, with additional fines totaling $5,000. Nelson is being held on $4,000 bond in the Shelby County Jail. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office on Friday put out a bulletin saying it was investigating the possible abduction of a 12-year-old, sixth-grade female in the Irwin area Thursday, May 14 at approximately 3:45 p.m. The female was approached getting off a school bus, by a man attempting to give away comic books and baseball cards. The same individual allegedly attempted to abduct a female in Manilla a short time later, and again a 17-year-old female in Westside. The description of the man and vehicle he was driving were the same in all three instances. The man was described as a white male, in his 60s, with short, gray hair and wearing a hat, possibly a ball cap. He also wore large glasses, and was wearing blue jeans and either a gray sweatshirt or striped shirt. The vehicle was described as a blue minivan with darkened back windows, and is described to have a mattress in the back. The last three digits of the license plate on the suspect vehicle could be G, R and A. At the time, the Harlan Community Schools was notified to make sure all students were accounted for on Friday, which they were. In addition, parents were being asked to tell their children to pay special attention to their surroundings. On Saturday, officials said they had generated numerous leads from the Shelby County public, and investigators were able to identify Nelson and make the arrest. Nelson was taken into custody at his residence in Cherokee County. Two search warrants were served on Nelson at the same time of the arrest. Evidence from the search warrants was collected and transported back to Shelby County, along with Nelson.
