Information systems convention coming
By ELISA SAND, Staff Reporter 05/07/2009
Omar El-Gayar
Dakota State University will be host to a conference for the Midwest Association for Information Systems on May 22-23. Conference Co-Chair Omar El-Gayar, who is dean of graduate studies and research at DSU, said that this is the first time DSU has hosted a convention for this group. This is the fourth year for the Midwest conference, which features research presentations on a variety of topics.

Some of the presentation topics include accounting information systems, computing history, information ethics issues, human computer interaction, information technology education, object oriented technology and virtual organizations and society.

The Midwest Association is comprised of 10 states, but El-Gayar said that research can be presented by faculty from anywhere. About 50 presenters and participants are expected, with several being DSU faculty and graduate students.

"It's a great opportunity for developing a strong network among regional universities in the field of information systems and information technology in general," El-Gayar said.

Having graduate programs in those fields also provides an opportunity.

"I feel this is an excellent opportunity for our graduate students to showcase their work and network with other faculty and students in the region."

Presentations include both completed research and research in progress.

"It still provides a great opportunity to share ideas and get feedback and critiques on the idea," he said.

Conference sponsors include DSU, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Illinois-Springfield and First Premiere Bank.

Research presentations are scheduled periodically throughout the conference. El-Gayar said that members of the public are welcome. The conference schedule is available at www.mwais.org. Presentations will be given in the Technology Classroom Building and the Mundt Library.

Other DSU faculty involved are Amit Deokar and Surendra Sarnikar.
