Thanks to a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation, the Guthrie County Tourism Council will be implementing the Creating a Value Added Community (CVAC) process in May. The CVAC process focuses on identifying assets (rather than needs) and looking for opportunities to build on them. According to the Foundation, rural communities often enjoy greater economic opportunities when they become part of a larger region with neighboring communities. The goal of the Guthrie County process is to explore potential countywide assets, especially those that link communities, such as the Middle Raccoon River, the Raccoon River Valley Trail system and two scenic by-ways. The Tourism Council currently is recruiting participants from across the county who represent business, residents, government, education and others to attend two visioning/strategy sessions Saturday, May 9 from 8:00-1:00, and Wednesday, May 20 from 5:30-9:00. The Council also is hosting an online survey from May 6 - May 16. A link to the survey can be found on the Guthrie County Tourism web site: http://www.guthriecountytourism.com/. If you do not have Internet access, you can visit your community library. As a token of the council's appreciation, respondents can enter a drawing for $50 in Chamber Bucks from Panora or Guthrie Center. Four prizes will be awarded. According to Tourism Council member Karen Sievers, "We know this is sort of a whirlwind process, but it's a fantastic opportunity to bring together a diverse group of people and really think about the great things Guthrie County has to offer and how we can capitalize on those assets. The online survey will provide an unprecedented opportunity for residents to contribute to the process as well."
