John Scannell knows all too well about how important a good hospital is during a crisis.
"Aug. 9, 1999 everything stopped." he said, referring to the day he found out his daughter had leukemia.

They were at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford and within a half hour they began treating Rhiannon.
"They're a hospital that heads at it head on," he said.
His daughter, now 11, went through a tough, two-year ordeal and is now healthy.
Scannell said he promised that if his daughter became well he would find ways to give back.
Last Thursday, Scannell and fellow firefighters from Company 4 of the Newington Volunteer Fire Department hosted a fundraiser for the medical center at TGI Fridays on the Berlin Turnpike from 5 to 9 p.m. Scannell collected donations in a hat and the restaurant donated 20 percent of its take from those hours to the effort.
Scannell's fellow firefighter and fellow disc jockey Brent McDougal, played tunes inside the restaurant.
General Manager Anthony Raucci said approximately $400 was raised through the effort.
"The Newington Volunteer Fire Department supports every worthy cause we can," said department administrator Sue Reniewicz. "We're proud of our firefighters."
Staff at the restaurant said they are happy to host fundraisers.
"Our company has given us the opportunity to do things like this," said bar manager Kirsten Colannino. "The general manager hopped right on it."
Any civic, non-profit, school or other organization interested in hosting a fundraiser at the restaurant can call Raucci at 436-6331.
