Madison High School senior John Bloom will soon add an illustrious title to his name: Eagle Scout.
Bloom attained his Eagle rank, the highest position available in the scouting movement, by building a storage shelter in Lake Herman State Park. The shed will hold paddles, lifejackets and other materials necessary for the canoe rental area at the park.
Bloom chose the project because of its size; he felt that a larger project would prove a greater challenge. He has previously helped with various construction projects with his father -- Jeff Bloom, co-owner of Lake County International, Inc. -- and said he has "always enjoyed that kind of work."
While Bloom technically started the project in November 2007, he received the plans and started building on Jan. 23, 2009. Then with an upcoming 18th birthday on March 19 -- scouts can no longer advance after reaching their 18th -- and a weeklong trip to Maui before that, Bloom said he felt a bit pressured to keep things on schedule.
Bloom worked with five of the oldest scouts, plus some friends who wanted to help, to put the thing together in four days. He had the total structure completed less than a month after the shed was approved.
The planning was the toughest part of the whole thing, Bloom said.
This fall, Bloom will be attending Black Hills State University in Spearfish for a degree in business, although he jokes that when it comes to majors, he has already switched "about five times."
Bloom's Court of Honor, the ceremony where he he will receive his Eagle Badge, will be held at 2 p.m. on May 9 at St. John Lutheran Church in Madison.
