A Spencer woman with family and professional ties to this area was named Tuesday as superintendent of the Panorama school system by the Panorama school board.

Kathy Elliott has been assistant superintendent of schools in the Spencer school district for seven years. Prior to that she was high school principal there for six years.

Her official tenure here will start July 1.

The new superintendent has a son, Eric, from the Guthrie Center area and two grandchildren who reside in the Panorama school district. In addition, the Lamont native taught English, Spanish and psychology some 17 years ago at Guthrie Center High School.

She becomes the third superintendent in the school's 20-year history, succeeding John Millhollin, who's been at the helm here 14 years. Prior to that, Bill Weddingfeld was superintendent six years. The retiring Millhollin will stay on after June 30 on a very limited basis to supervise a construction project that's underway.

Elliott graduated from Graceland University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree, received her master's in education administration from Iowa State University in 1993 and her superintendent's endorsement from the University of Northern Iowa in 2001.

Besides her stays at Guthrie Center and Spencer, she was assistant high school principal and 7-12 curriculum director at Glenwood for three years and the shared curriculum director in Underwood for one year.

Besides Eric, a construction worker, her three other children are: Chad, a musician, artist and writer from Coon Rapids; Julie, a second grade teacher in Lamoni; and Cherie Christ, a web communications manager at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.
