SOUTHBURY - April 24, Arbor Day, was celebrated in Southbury under the aegis of the Southbury Historical Tree Restoration Committee on a clear crisp spring morning.

The day was dedicated to celebration of the long life of service to the town by the late George H. Stone, Sr., who died earlier this year.

In recognition of Mr. Stone's contribution as a businessman and as a volunteer, the Tree Committee planted a young Memorial Sugar Maple at Community House Park.

In attendance were members of the Stone family, Southbury First Selectman Bill Davis, representatives of the Southbury Volunteer Firemen's Association and the Southbury Ambulance Association.

Also there was Public Works Director Tom Crowe and members of his department.

The Tree Committee delegation was led by Chairman Cathy Palmer, with vice chair Paul Palmer and members Tom Gaipa, Pat Kearns and Terry Modzelewiski.

For the 11th year Southbury has been recognized as "Tree City USA". Mr. Palmer presented the Tree City USA Award and Flag to the first selectman, Mr. Crowe and members of the Tree Committee.

The flag will be flown at the Town Hall flagpole, symbolizing the honor paid to Mr. Stone's memory.
