On May 1 at 6:30 p.m., three of our exemplars, Ann Leary, Marie Bostwick and Lauren Lipton, will take part in a discussion with Davyne Verstandig in the first annual Creative Conversations event, sponsored by the Litchfield County Writers Project and held at the University of Connecticut's Torrington campus.
Mrs. Leary's first novel, "Outtakes from a Marriage," was published in June 2008 to excellent reviews. Her memoir, "An Innocent, a Broad," (2004) tells of her experiences as a first-time mother giving birth to her premature son in a foreign country. Ms. Leary is married to comedian and actor Denis Leary and they have two children.
Ms. Bostwick's first novel, "Fields of Gold," was placed in the finals for RT BOOKclub magazine's Best Historical Saga Award. Her next novel, "River's Edge," received the Golden Quill Award and was a finalist for a National Reader's Choice Award. Ms. Bostwick's latest novel, "On Wings of the Morning," was the sequel to "Fields of Gold." This historical novel follows the intertwined fates of two characters and is evocative, romantic and impeccably researched.
Ms. Lipton is the author of "It's About Your Husband" and "Mating Habits of the North American WASP." She also writes a weekly column for the Wall Street Journal's Weekend Journal section and has been a senior editor at In Style Weddings and a deputy editor at Cosmopolitan. Her work has appeared in Martha Stewart Weddings, Glamour, Marie Claire, Fit Pregnancy and Working Mother and on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."
Davyne Verstandig, director of the writers project, said, "Ann Leary, Lauren Lipton and Marie Bostwick will be in conversation with me about their own unique creative processes. Part of our discussion will also revolve around their books ... . We will also explore the way in which living and writing in Litchfield County has or has not been part of their working life."
The Litchfield County Writers Project provides programs that celebrate the work of Litchfield County writers and support the academic aims of the University of Connecticut. The Torrington UConn Co-op carries all the books for LCWP events, available to students and the general public.
The May 1 discussion will be in the Francis W. Hogan Lecture Hall at the campus, located at 855 University Drive. For further information, see the Web site www.lcwp.uconn.edu or call 860-626-6852.
