On April 13, an Alachua County grand jury conducted an inquiry into the February vehicle pursuit and shooting death of James Lester Estes. No indictment was returned, and the grand jury found the shooting of Estes was a justifiable homicide. The shooting occurred on Feb. 3 of this year ending a prolonged car chase that began in Bradford County. The chase wound up in Alachua County where Estes was fatally shot by Bradford County Sheriff's Office Capt. Eddie Boatwright. Sheriff Gordon Smith also fired his weapon during the pursuit when Estes swerved his vehicle towards him as he was diverting traffic from the danger. Estes had robbed two convenience stores on the date of the incident and had an extensive criminal history prior to his death.
