In conjuction with National Library Week, Pat Sleister, librarian at Guthrie Center's Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library, gave an annual presentation to the city council Monday evening. Reviewing the year's activities, Sleister reported an increase in library usage the past year. The 2008 numbers compared to (2007) were: visitors 12,200 (11,620); 2,234 registered patrons (2,087); items checked out 30,210 (29,043). The library owns 30,210 items for loan including: 3,279 video materials, 2,351 audio materials, 83 magazine and newspaper subscriptions, 28,827 books and serials, and 15 public computers. The ICN / meeting room was used 178 times the past year for non-library functions and 24 times for kids' programs. During the past year, staff continued to update and improve the library's web page located at: www.guthriecenter.lib.ia.us Volunteers worked 148 times for a total of 298 hours, the equivalent of $2,160 at minimum wage. Federal assistance paid for an "Experience Works" employee 18 hours per week. The library and Guthrie County Extension cooperated to provide an "early out" place when school dismissed early for teacher in-service training. These sessions attracted 60-70 children for the afternoon. The library has changing quilt exhibits and an exhibit case featuring local collectibles.
