Lone Tree Fire and Rescue add new members
By: 04/02/2009
Lone Tree Fire and Rescue (LTFR) is pleased to announce 5 new members to their department. The new members are Shari Hudson of Nichols; Matt Parizek, a Lone Tree native; Logan Schnoebelen, son of Assistant Fire Chief Mindy Scott; Nick Petsel, son of firefighter J.B. Petsel; and Jake Jones from Columbus Junction. The addition of these new members brings our roster to 31 active members.

The new members are currently involved in a First Responder class in Hills; this class is 56 hours of classroom instruction that meets on Sundays from 5 - 9 p.m. The cost is $435.00 which includes the class, books, and national certification to provide emergency medical care. New members are also required to obtain certification in Hazardous Materials (12 hours)and CPR for Health Care Providers (4 hours).
With the addition of these new members come many internal costs. The members will each need new gear for firefighting which includes a coat and pants, $1600.00; suspenders, $40.00; helmet, $225.00; boots and gloves, $55.00; and protective hoods, $37.00. The members will also need a full physical, $500.00 and a pager to alert them to the emergency, $450.00. Additional training and certification in the National Incident Management
System, there is no cost for the class but 10 hours of personal time donation and national certification as a Firefighter 1. Again, there is no cost but 60 hours of personal time donation. There will also be hundreds of hours training on the equipment.
These new members are required to donate 132 hours of class time and hundreds more during their probation period of 2 years. With their commitment to the department and to the community the department commits nearly $3600.00 to each to pay for their classes and purchase Personal Protective Equipment. Lone Tree Fire and Rescue will invest $18,000.00 in these five new members. These costs are not being paid for by local taxes, but by past and future donations.
Lone Tree Fire and Rescue is in need of the communities' help in raising money needed to pay for the classes and equipment. If you would like to donate specifically for that purpose, please note it with your donation, other wise a general donation will be appreciated and it will be used for the new members.
The motto of Lone Tree Fire and Rescue is "Fear not, We care". If the LTFR is to fulfill that motto they need to look to the future. For the year ending of 2008 the average seniority was 13 years out of 26 members. The department strongly feels that these 5 new members will be here for a long time, which is why they believe this is a great investment for the community.
The LTFR asks the community of Lone Tree to please consider helping them to look to the future needs of our community. In planning for the future they are working hard to be staffed level that will continue to provide the community with excellent service. Many of the members are 20 plus years in service and will sadly retire and take all their knowledge and skills with them. The LTFR want to take advantage of that and have the new members watch and learn from them before they leave.
Lone Tree Fire and Rescue will be holding their annual dance Saturday, April 4, from 8:30 p.m. to midnight at the Lone Tree American Legion. Please come join them and meet the new members. Brain and Joanne Havel along with Cathy Woodiwiss will be providing the musical entertainment. The Havels as well as Woodiwiss have graciously donated their time and musical equipment. Please let their wonderful donation; valued at $500.00 be just the beginning.

Stay Safe
Steve Flake
LTFR Fire Chief
