Saturday's 45th anniversary of the Guthrie County Pork Producers at the Guthrie County fairgrounds community building resulted in one of the organization's most successful banquets and trophy auctions in recent years. The auction of nine trophies brought $2,325 and an additional $795 was added to the coffers through the auction of the "baked with lard" pies and a large stuffed pig. The Kenney family of Bagley spent $250 for the grand champion market hog trophy. Buttler Agronomy of Guthrie Center paid the most for a trophy, $325 for the champion home-raised market barrow. Four adult entries and seven junior pies were judged in the pie contest. Sherry Carney, Adair, took top honors in the senior division with her cherry pie. It brought $100 from Gage and "Momma" Buttler. Second place went to JoAnn Zieser, Guthrie Center, with a peach pie while Betty Whitehead, Panora, took third with her cherry pie. The Panorama High School home economics class entered all seven of the junior pies. First place went to Mike Barnes and Nick Crawford. Second was awarded to Stacie Christofferson. Kaitlin Wolf and Kalin Gafjen took third. Also entering pies were Joel Betzer and Ellie Wilke; Natasha Sheeder and John Derry; Brian Cummins; Amanda Roy and Jordan Crawford. President Bret Hodges presented Lindsay Calvert of Guthrie Center with a $500 scholarship. Dave Messinger gave the treasurer's report. Don Schwartz reported as secretary of the organization. Additional officers and directors are: Keith Stetzel, vice president; Scott and Karen Benton, Bear Grove; Brandon Peters and Jessica Glade, Cass; Pete and Betty Durbin, Dodge; Randy and Lynette Carney, Grant; Patrick and Jenifer Kenney, Richland; Bill and Sarah Messinger, Thompson; Jeff and Jodi Meiners, Valley, and Keith and Jen Buttler, at-large. Other directors are: Don and Carolyn Schwartz, Highland; Dave and Lorraine Messinger, Penn-Stuart; Bret and Brandy Hodges, Seely; Keith and Tawny Stetzel, Union. Betty Durbin is in charge of the project book. Drawings for door prizes created a buzz as piggy banks, donated by Peoples Trust and Savings Bank, contained cash and candy. The evening concluded with music by the band, Clutterbilly.
