Middle school students from I.S. 227 Louis Armstrong Middle School in Corona got a chance last Friday to show off their green thumbs literally.
Winners of the Global Green Artist Challenge, sponsored by the city Department of Education and Materials for the Arts, 25 youngsters created a 8-by-20-foot mural depicting a teeming seascape at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.
Working with renowned marine-life artist Wyland, the students painted the mural in front of an audience at the 31st annual Artexpo New York, a well-known fine and popular art event for both first-time buyers and avid collectors.
The youngsters also got the chance to walk through Wylands Clean Water Tour at the Javits Center, a fully interactive human-sized maze that demonstrates the importance of aquatic environments to our ecosystem.
