Middle school students from I.S. 227 Louis Armstrong Middle School in Corona got a chance last Friday to show off their green thumbs — literally.
Winners of the Global Green Artist Challenge, sponsored by the city Department of Education and Materials for the Arts, 25 youngsters created a 8-by-20-foot mural depicting a teeming seascape at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.
Working with renowned marine-life artist Wyland, the students painted the mural in front of an audience at the 31st annual Artexpo New York, a well-known fine and popular art event for both first-time buyers and avid collectors.
The youngsters also got the chance to walk through Wyland’s Clean Water Tour at the Javits Center, a fully interactive human-sized maze that demonstrates the importance of aquatic environments to our ecosystem.
