Electrical blaze lights up Jackson Heights street

For a few hours at least, a quiet Jackson Heights block turned into “The Towering Inferno” of 80th Street.
Flames two stories high rose from a Con Edison electrical cover in the early morning hours of Feb. 11, shocking even longtime residents used to feeder cable fires on 80th Street between 34th and 35th avenues.

“It was like a volcano coming out of nowhere,” said Tony Iaccio, who lives in a co-op building down the street.
The fire took three hours to contain, in part because the FDNY had to wait for Con Ed workers to shut off power to the cables involved, according to community activist and longtime resident Laura Cadorette.
The blaze destroyed a parked Honda Odyssey minivan and frayed plenty of nerves.
A ground-floor tenant at 34-47 80th Street, the building closest to the fire, had to move his family into the back rooms of their apartment because of the intense heat from the flames, Cadorette said.
According to 25th City Council District candidate Daniel Dromm, the fire was the fourth feeder cable fire to occur on the block in the last few years.
Down the street, the bark of a tree was still blackened by a December 2001 blaze that erupted underneath the sidewalk, which Cadorette attributed to overburdened Con Ed electrical cables.
As of press time, Con Ed had no comment on last week’s incident or reports of a string of electrical fires affecting 80th Street.
“Con Ed needs to replace these wires,” Cadorette said. “Because the insulation on the cables is shot, there’s nothing to prevent this from happening again”
