GROTON, Conn. - With a battle cry of "Feed the Pig," as in "piggy bank," Naval Submarine Base New London's Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) will be encouraging military members and families to build wealth without debt and to save money and grow personal savings for their immediate and long term needs.

The FFSC spearheads Military Saves Week February 19 - 27 and hosts numerous events and activities across the base on money matters, balancing budgets, identity theft, car buying and many more financial focused topics.
"We are collaborating with a number of departments across SUBASE to help members and their families save money," said Martha Hanley, Family-life Specialist at the SUBASE FFSC.
During Military Saves Week, children will have an opportunity to learn more about money and saving for the future as well.
"The SUBASE Youth Center will be holding classes to help children learn the value of money and why it's important to save," added Hanley. "Through coloring, collage, scavenger hunts and essay contests, children will learn about saving money."
All children who participate in activities will receive prizes with special prizes will be awarded to the winners of each contest.
The contests for adults range from coupon saving, credit card "plastic surgery," and a scavenger hunt. The winners of each contest will be announced on March 2.
To better benefit from the budget courses, participants should bring their bills, three Leave and Earning Statements (LES) bank and credit card statements.
"We need to have a correct debt to income ratio to do a realistic budget for service members," stated Hanley.
No appointments will be required to sit down with the financial specialists and to develop a budget for a better future.
Planning for retirement will be the week's final focus as FFSC will hold a Thrift Savings Plan enrollment day on February 27. Personnel will be on hand to answer questions about TSP and explain the advantages of this retirement program.
For more information about Military Saves week activities contact Martha Hanley at 694-2792 or the FFSC information desk at 694-3383.
