GROTON, Conn. - Members of the Navy New London community will have the chance to meet NASA's first submariner astronaut and hear of his experiences as Navy Capt. Stephen G. Bowen returns to Groton, Feb. 25.

Bowen, a submariner whose last Navy assignment in Groton was as Executive Officer for Pre-Commissioning Unit Virginia (SSN 774), will speak at Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE), in an event open to anyone with authorized access to the base, and at the Submarine Force Library and Museum, in an event open to the public.
The SUBASE event will take place in Dealey Theater at 2 p.m., and the Museum event will take place in the Museum theater at 3:30 p.m.
Bowen is also anticipated to visit with local school children at the base's partner school, Groton's Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School, as well as with Sailors stationed aboard USS Virginia (SSN 774).
A Cohasset, Mass. native and a United States Naval Academy graduate in the Class of 1986, Bowen is the first Submarine Officer selected by NASA. He was chosen as a mission specialist in July 2000.
Bowen recently completed his first space flight during the STS-126 Endeavour mission, Nov. 14 - 30, 2008. Highlights of the almost 16-day mission included expanding the living quarters of the International Space Station to eventually house six member crews by delivering a new bathroom, kitchenette, two bedrooms, an exercise machine, and a water recycling system. During the mission, Bowen performed three spacewalks.
The Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Library and Museum are free and open to the public. For directions to the Museum or more information about it, visit www.ussnautilus.org.
