Hearty beef producers and friends ventured out in frigid weather Sunday evening for the Guthrie County Cattlemen's Association 42nd annual meeting at Lake Panorama National Resort.
The event raised $5,170 for promotion and scholarships for the coming year.
Lindsay Calvert, 2008 beef queen, recapped her year's reign as a promoter for the organization. Afterwards, she crowned Kegan Downing of Panora Guthrie County Beef Queen for 2009. Two others vying for the title were Beth Allen, Panora, named princess, and Leslie Chalfant of Guthrie Center.
The association funded four scholarships the past year. Winners were Courtney Hughes of Bagley, Austin McClellan of Bayard, Dustin Seidl of Coon Rapids and Michelle Derry of Audubon.
Expounding on topics of interest to cattle producers and rural Iowa residents was Tom Shipley representing the Iowa Cattlemen's Association.
Entertainment was provided by Guthrie Center High School speech students.
The traditional auction of trophies to be awarded at the Guthrie County Fair brought in $5,170 for the cattlemen's treasury. This was significantly under the $7,525 raised at the 2008 banquet.
Paying top dollar for the Grand Champion Market Beef trophy was Guthrie County State Bank, $300. The Reserve Grand Champion trophy fetched the same amount, $300, from Peoples Trust and Savings Bank. The highest priced trophy sold was the Cow-Calf Champion purchased by Diamond T Farms of Guthrie Center for $400.
The auction also featured two embroidered prints by Muir Embroidering of Jefferson for the Guthrie County Cattlemen's Association which brought a total of $500. Two caramel apple pies were offered by the 2008 queen and sold for a total of $220.
Serving as officers the past year were Brock Robson, Guthrie Center, president; John Johnson, Stuart, vice president; Rose Kastner, Yale, secretary; and Denny Scheuermann, Jamaica, treasurer.
