Ahart's status as county engineer was in question after a county-to-county agreement between Audubon County and Shelby County to provide engineering services was terminated by Audubon County last month.
Both counties had picked up a fair portion of Ahart's salary and benefits.
The Shelby County Board of Supervisors offered Ahart a six-month contract that will keep him on staff through June of this year, as well as a three-year contract extension. Both parties agreed to the terms of the contracts.
According to this year's contract, Ahart will be paid a sum not to exceed $45,000, for services through June 30, 2009. The three-year contract extension includes salaries of $90,000 annually in the first year, $93,000 in the second year and $96,000 in the third year of the contract, which ends June 30, 2012.
Ahart will receive four weeks vacation, insurance benefits, sick leave, paid holidays and other fringe benefits granted Secondary Road Department employees in Shelby County, in like and equal manner.
