   Many veterans, both young and old, usually avoid going to college because it has been years since they’ve been to school and they fear they won't relate to a younger student population.
   The Veteran’s Upward Bound program at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, is a free U.S. Department of Education program created to help veterans refresh their academic skills and give them the confidence to successfully obtain a college degree.

   With a new GI Bill taking effect in August, many veterans are expected to take advantage of college education benefits like the Veteran’s Upward Bound program.
   LaGuardia’s Veterans Upward Bound program is one of only 39 colleges across the United States offering the program, funded by the Department of Education to help veterans improve their skills in the following courses:
   College level Reading/Literature/Composition;
   College level Mathematics;
   Computer Basics;
   GED preparation classes
   The Veteran Service office at LaGuardia Community College is located at 29-10 Thomson Ave., Room C-371 in L.I.C. For more information, or to find out if you are eligible, contact Edith Segovia at (718) 482-5231.
