The Britton Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual "Shop Britton Night" on Monday. Formerly called "10% Off Night," the Chamber changed the name several years ago to put an increased emphasis on shopping at home during the holiday season. "Merchants will be open extra hours, and we are encouraging everybody to shop at home," said Britton Area Chamber of Commerce President Virgie Schaaf. "Our community and businesses have a lot to offer, and we hope area residents will come down and check us out." Many merchants will offer holiday specials all day long but will also be open until 8 p.m. Monday evening to permit shoppers to take advantage of savings after normal work hours. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to win $200 in Britton Bucks. Registration boxes can be found in participating businesses and a drawing will be held at 7 p.m. The winner must be in a participating business at the time of the drawing to win the money. The Britton Buck promotion will actually begin on Friday with a drawing planned for 4 p.m. Drawings will also be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 1, Dec. 8, 15, and 22. If winners are not in a participating business, an extra name will be drawn the next time with names drawn until all prizes are given away at the final drawing on Dec. 22. "Our retailers are going out of their way to entice people to shop here, and we need to support them or we won't have these stores," stressed Schaaf. "If we don't keep our retailers here we won't have much of a town left. It's so easy to jump in your car, but it's amazing the things you can find right here. There are a lot of wonderful things in our town." Chamber of Commerce Christmas activities will continue the following week on Saturday, Dec. 6, with the annual Christmas on Parade celebration. This year's theme is "A Swingin' Christmas." The event will feature numerous holiday activities and shopping during the day, a 2 p.m. movie matinee, Santa pictures, and a lighted parade followed by a Christmas Program and a free dance to the Downie Band. Groups, organizations, and businesses are also encouraged to decorate a tree that will be displayed at Amacher Auditorium from noon-5:45 p.m. on Dec. 6. Organizations can win Britton Bucks, and businesses will compete for the traveling trophy. Those planning to decorate a tree are asked to contact the Britton Area Chamber of Commerce (448-5323) with a brief description for the printed program. A new event this year is a "Gingerbread House Contest. It is open to any youth group with children up through high school and houses will be displayed as part of the holiday décor at Amacher Auditorium. Anyone interested in having a float in the lighted parade is also encouraged to start making plans. No advance registration is required and participants should line up at 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Eight Street and Fourth Avenue.
