Registration fees will be increasing for newly purchased pickup trucks and special trucks, Hedger said.
In 2009, the registration fee for new and used pickups weighing less than 3 tons will increase from $65 to $150 per year for vehicles less than 7 model years, she explained. Registration for pickups older than 7 model years will gradually be phased down to a $50-per-year fee.
The registration fee for 2010 and newer model year pickups less than 3 tons that are used for commercial or agricultural business is still $150. But if the pickup is used for personal use, it will be assessed registration fees by weight and list price, just like a car, said Hedger.
The weight and list price for cars will be adjusted up so the minimum fee will be $50.
The fees on vehicles currently owned will not increase, but they will take longer to be reduced to the minimum fee of $50 at 12 model years.
Title fees will increase from $15 to $25.
Registration fees on all trailers less than 2,000 pounds will increase from $10 to $20, and all trailers more than 2,000 pounds will be $30. All travel trailers will go from 20 cents per square foot to 30 cents per square foot.
"December registration renewal notices have been recently mailed," aid Hedger. "There may be two options - one for payment before Dec. 31, 2008, and one for payment after Jan. 1, 2009. Customers are strongly urged to examine their statements; if might be to their advantage to pay early."
The additional funds generated will be used to meet Iowa's road and bridge infrastructure needs during the next 20 years.
The state's roads and bridges have been deteriorating at a rapid rate.
