Cat Project wants bottles and cans
The Greater New Haven Cat Project, Inc. wants refundable cans and bottles to help the feral and stray cats in the Greater New Haven area. People are asked to bring their clean bottles and cans Saturday, Nov. 15, to 965 State St., New Haven between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to help fund their spay/neuter program and humanely address overpopulation of stray and feral cats. The organization provides low-cost spay/neuter assistance to people caring for feral, stray or abandoned cats in the Greater New Haven area. Cat Project volunteer recruitment

Annual jingle bell dinner dance Dec. 6
The West Haven Italian-American Civic Association will host its annual Jingle Bell dinner dance Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Westwoods/West Haven Italian -American Club Banquet Hall located at 85 Chase Lane. A full-course, sit-down dinner with dessert and coffee will be served by Cusano by Alphonsina at 6:30 p.m., followed with music by Vinnie Carr for dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight. Notre Dame High School fair Dec. 6
Note Dame High School of West Haven, will host its annual Christmas fair Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hummels, Lladro, David Winter Cottages, crystal, Christmas cards, home-baked goods, clothing for the Note Dame man and other miscellaneous items will be featured. A drawing for 50 raffle prizes also will take place.

Tellabration Storytelling event
The West Haven Community House will serve as the local site for the international storytelling phenomenon, Tellabration! to be held Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the Community House, 227 Elm St.
The WHCH Head Start program, in conjunction with the West Haven Family Resource Center, will host the free event for families, which is designed to introduce adults, as well as children, to the pleasures of the oral art of storytelling.
The program features stories and songs with Margie Warner, a musician with a unique understanding of what makes kids tick, who has been teaching the joy and humor of life through music since 1979. Warner created a pre-K curriculum, "Music with Margie," which is offered to Preschoolers, Kindergartners and Special Education students. She also leads parent-teacher workshops and performs at family concerts that feature interactive story-songs.
Dozens of storytelling happenings with take place worldwide as part of the Tellabration! event. It is one of the programs offered by The Connecticut Storytelling Center, based at Connecticut College in New London. Toy drive to benefit Good Shepherd
Congregation Sinai of Milford is sponsoring a Toy Drive to benefit Good Shepherd Child Development Center. The Center, a partner agency of The United Way, provides early care and education services on a full-day, full-year basis for infants, toddlers and preschool children from working families. Particular consideration is given to low income and/or underserved families.
Due to the economy, donations of all types have dropped off significantly. Now is the time to help some needy children.
Any toy or game, appropriate for ages 3 months through 5 years, would be greatly appreciated. The toys must be new and unwrapped. They may be dropped off at Congregation Sinai, 55 Old Gate Lane, or contact the Synagogue office (301-0588) to arrange to have the toys picked up. Donations accepted now through Dec. 17.

Junior Woman's Club Dutch Auction
West Haven Junior Woman's Club, member of Connecticut Junior Women, Inc., invites the public to their annual Holiday Party and Dutch Auction Friday, Dec. 5, at the Church of the Holy Spirit (formerly known as Christ Episcopal Church) second floor (front eneterance), 28 Church Street, West Haven at 6:30 p.m. The event promises to be a festive evening full of fun, food (hor doeuvres, dessert and beverages), and holiday games. Family Fun Night Fundraiser
Seth Haley School will be having a Family Fun Night Fundraiser at Barnes and Noble on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. There will be student artwork on display, student entertainment, and lots of fun. Fifteen percent of all proceeds will go directly to the school for enrichment activities. Come on down for a night of fun and do some holiday shopping.

Christmas Fair

Enrollment for after-school program
The West Haven Community House is holding open enrollment for its Carrigan After-School Program for seventh- and eighth-grade students. The second of three 7-week sessions for the 2008/2009 school year will operate from the week of Dec. 8 to the week of Feb. 2. Each student will attend two days per week, Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program will be held after school at Carrigan Middle School from dismissal until 5 p.m. Bus transportation home from school will be provided. Activities will consist of: theme exploration (computers, fashion and modeling, magic, African drumming, woodworking, martial arts, cooking and sewing, board games andpuzzles), tutoring in math, reading and English; recreation; and life skills development (including self-image and self-expression, dating and relationships, personal goals, physical development and sexuality, drugs and alcohol). Garden Club meeting

Volunteer Firefighters holding a Hockey Fundraiser
The North End Hose Co. 3 volunteers of the West Haven Fire Department are holding a family fun night at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Hockey game on Friday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m.
The Sound Tigers will host the Hartford Wolfpack at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. Great seats are available for a discounted price $17.50, the volunteers will receive $5 for every ticket sold and will save $10.50 per seat.

Schooner hosts an Evening of Oysters
Schooner Inc will host An Evening of Oysters on Monday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sage American Grill & Oyster Bar in New Haven. The event, which includes an oyster tasting and dinner, will highlight the importance, past and present, of oystering in New Haven and Long Island Sound.
The evening will feature presentations from Tim Visel, Director of the Regional Vocational Aquaculture Program at the Sound School, about the history of oystering in New Haven and Dr. Vincent Breslin of Southern Connecticut State University about the current state of oysters in Long Island Sound.
Dave McCoart of Sage American Grill will lead guests through an oyster tasting, helping them to discern the different characteristics of each type of oyster.
Tools of the oystering trade will be on display, including a traditional oyster boat-called a Sharpie-as well as a contemporary oyster boat provided by Norm Bloom & Sons. Additional highlights will include local artist/oysterman Jonathan Waters of Stony Creek and a silent auction including oyster-related items.
Reservations are required. Tickets are $65 per person (age 21 years and older) and can be reserved by calling 203- 865-1737. All proceeds from the event will support Schooner Inc's environmental education programs.

Sacred Heart hosts Holly Berry Festival
The Holly Berry Festival which benefits the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Retirement Fund is Friday, Nov. 21, from 3 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Sacred Heart Academy, 265 Benham St., in Hamden. Both days feature 60 great crafters, many with holiday crafts and gifts, specialty foods, like peppers and sausage, fried dough, home-made clam chowder, home-made breads, cookies and candies. Children and family attractions include: photos with Santa, a fishing pond, face painting, lollipop tree, craft and sand art projects for the children to make, entertainment, flower arranging and Italian pastry demonstrations and more. On Friday night from 5 to 7 p.m., enjoy a delicious ziti dinner complete with meatballs, salad, rolls, beverage and dessert. Turkey Shoot planned for Nov. 21
The public is invited to participate in a "Turkey Shoot" for the benefit of the 2009 Greater New Haven St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Knights of St. Patrick Club, 1551 State St., New Haven.
Forty raffles, with a ticket price of $1 per ticket, will be held starting at 7 p.m. The winning ticket for each raffle will receive a turkey. Two additional prizes will also be awarded with each raffle. This event, historically run by the Knights of St. Patrick, is being hosted at their club as a fundraiser to benefit the 2009 parade. The Parade Committee is faced with raising additional monies this year to cover the cost of police overtime on parade day as a result of the fiscal woes in the city of New Haven. Besides supporting this worthwhile cause, attendees can enjoy an evening of camaraderie with the hopes of going home with a Thanksgiving turkey.

Tommy Fund holiday cards available
Tommy Fund holiday cards to benefit children with cancer are on sale at locations throughout the greater New Haven area
The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer and Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital are promoting the fight against pediatric cancer through the annual sale of holiday greeting cards. The cards are part of a regional fundraising effort to meet the educational, recreational and treatment needs of children with cancer. All of the Tommy Fund cards are designed by young artists who are receiving treatment at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.
Tommy Fund holiday cards are on sale now at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Atrium Gift Shop, all southern Connecticut AAA motor clubs, and through the Tommy Fund Web site, www.tommyfund.org. Holiday card sales have generated more than $300,000 for the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer in the last 21 years. Proceeds provide direct and indirect financial assistance to patients who are treated at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. They have helped fund a pediatric oncology research nurse and nursing education and research fellowships at the Yale School of Medicine for physicians in pediatric oncology. The Tommy Fund also provides recreational and diversional activities for patients, including family outings and such items as TV monitors, headphones, games and toys for patients.

Alliance Children's Theatre performs

Host families needed
Host families are being sought for international students studying English at the University of New Haven through the ELS program. Students are eager to be immersed in the language and culture of the United States. Living with a Host Family provides interaction and social activities not available through a dormitory or hotel.
Host families are asked to provide breakfast and dinner to the students. Internet access is desired. Host Families are also asked to provide transportation to the University of New Haven or be close to a bus line.

JFS Celebrates National Adoption Awareness Month
Jewish Family Service of New Haven is hosting an Adoption Open House on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Interested families and individuals will have the opportunity to learn about the various types of adoption, learn about the children waiting for a "forever" family and hear about the home study process. Older child adoption, domestic adoption, infant adoption, intercountry adoption, DCF adoption, medically complex and special needs adoptions will be discussed.
This November open house is scheduled in conjunction with National Adoption Awareness Month. Refreshments will be served.

Eligible veterans offered flu vaccine
Eligible veterans can receive the flu vaccine from VA Connecticut Healthcare System at flu shot clinics scheduled over the next eight weeks. xcluding weekends, Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, a walk-in clinic will be open at the West Haven campus, 950 Campbell Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main lobby of Building 2.
Veterans must be enrolled for care with VA Connecticut Healthcare System. Identification is required. No appointment is necessary.

North End Hose Co. 3 of the West Haven Fire Department is selling the popular Entertainment book to raise funds for company equipment and training.

Arts Council conducts survey
How do you take your art? The Arts Council of Greater New Haven wants to know! In an effort to better understand how the community participates in the arts, the Arts Council is conducting a simple survey online. The survey consists of several straightforward questions, including where people go to hear live music or catch an exhibit; what people consider their favorite arts pursuits - concerts, plays, visits to museums; and what would make for a livelier arts community in Greater New Haven. All community members are encouraged to offer their input, including those who do not actively participate in the arts.

MOMS Club seeks members
The MOMS Club of Milford-East is accepting new members from West Haven and East Milford. Moms Offering Moms Support is an international, nonprofit organization specifically for at-home mothers everywhere. The group helps mothers feel good about their decision to stay home with their children and give them the opportunity to share activities with other moms and their kids. The MOMS Club offers a variety of activities, including: Age-appropriate playgroups, picnics, walks and seasonal activities; outings to local playgrounds, zoos, petting farms and museums; guest speakers on topics of child development, parenting, etc. There also is a monthly Moms Night Out. In conjunction with the program headed by Margi Maher, the committee representing the Class of 1950, is contacting all graduates from that year asking for their contributions toward the replacement or refurbishing of the seats in the West Haven High School auditorium.
The Class of '50 is asking former classmates to send a $5 check toward this project. When the auditorium is completely redone, a plaque will be placed in the high school lobby, bearing the names of all contributors, which in this case will be The Class of 1950 WHHS. MS Support Group
The West Haven MS Support Group meets at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital, Building 2, located at 950 Campbell Ave., in West Haven, every Thursday at noon.
There are more than 6,000 Connecticut residents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an oftentimes debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter offers more than 25 support groups throughout Connecticut. These groups bring together people who share a common life experience as it relates to MS and its effects.

Bingo takes place at OLOV and St. John
Bingo takes place Tuesday nights at 7:30 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 600 Jones Hill Road. Also, bingo takes place Wednesday nights at 7:30 at St. John Vianney Church, 300 Captain Thomas Blvd. Both events are smoke-free. The public is invited.

Band instruments needed
West Haven Board of Education encourages residents to donate band instruments. Many students would love the opportunity to participate in band programs, but the cost can be prohibitive. Free training offered in human services
The Marrakech Inc. Academy for Human Service Training is offering a free training program for youth 18 to 21 in the Greater New Haven area. This unique program includes both classroom and hands-on internship experience and prepares individuals to work with adults and children with developmental disabilities. The ultimate program goal is to place graduates in full-time employment. Training takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday and will run for about 12 weeks. Interested candidates must attend an Informational Overview Session, which takes place every Wednesday at 3 p.m. sharp at 526 Whalley Ave. in New Haven. Donate diapers to the Diaper Bank
What is a better gift for the holiday season than one that is needed year-round? The New Haven Diaper Bank hopes to provide one of the most basic needs for New Haven's youngest residents this holiday season and United Way of Greater New Haven is partnering with them as a drop-off location. United Way is located at 71 Orange St. in New Haven between Chapel Street and Crown Street. Diapers can be dropped off between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The New Haven Diaper Bank's yearly goal is to provide 250,000 diapers to local families in need, with a hope of increasing the amount of diapers to 1 million in the near future. The Diaper Bank accepts diapers of all sizes, but is especially in need of size 6 and Pull-Ups.

Help children find homes
For millions of children in the U.S., thousands in Connecticut, abuse and neglect are a way of life. Anyone can help an abused or neglected child find what every child deserves, a safe and loving home. Children in Placement's Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers work alongside judges, attorneys and social workers. They are trained community volunteers appointed by a judge to speak up for abused and neglected children in court. CIP needs volunteers. Donate cars to boys and girls campaign
Now that the price of scrap metal has sharply risen, the Connecticut Boys and Girls Club Car Campaign will accept most any car with no restrictions. Cars will be picked up anywhere in Connecticut, usually within a week, and are sold at auction. To donate, call 800-246-0493. Funds obtained by the sales go directly to help the Connecticut clubs.

Job interviews for older workers
Job seekers age 55 and older in the Greater New Haven area can find paid employment with the help of the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut. Training also may be available for income-eligible applicants. Call 752-3059 to make an appointment to register with their employment service. Higher Ground ministry at Grace Baptist Church
Anyone with a problem with alcohol, substance abuse, any compulsive behavior or living with a loved one who has an addiction is invited to receive support, encouragement, and spiritual guidance that will change their life. Grace Baptist Church at 400 Burnt Plains Road, Milford, is offering Higher Ground Ministry Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. weekly. Fundraiser for parent support group
The Local System of Care's Parent Support Group for children with special needs is holding a recycling fundraiser.
To help protect the environment, group members are accepting used cell phones, ink jet cartridges, DVDs, video games, portable DVD players, laptop and notebook computers, MP3 players, video game consoles, digital cameras, digital picture frames, and portable navigation and GPS devices.
People can drop off items at the Department of Human Resources, City Hall.
Items will be recycled in accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations or will be refurbished and sold.
All proceeds will help fund programs for children with special needs.
