Old-fashioned turkey bingo Nov. 20

An old-fashioned turkey bingo will take place Thursday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m. in the Baldwin Center main hall. The event will be sponsored by West River Health Care Center. There will be special prizes, including the grand prize of a turkey dinner with all the fixings. Tickets are $1 and refreshments will be served.

Do it yourself energy tips

Home Depot will present a program on useful and easy tips to save energy this winter Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. in the Baldwin Center Library. Store representatives will demonstrate new products that can make homes more energy efficient and save on fuel costs. Sign up at the main desk.

Newcomer's lunch at Baldwin

Toddler open gym registration

The recreation department will offer a toddler open gym program for ages 1 to 3 and their caregivers. The gym will be open for them to explore, play ballgames, climb through tunnels, run, jump, and make new friends. This is a free-play activity with a closing time circle. A caregiver must remain with the child. The class begins Thursday, Nov. 20 at 9 to 10 a.m. or 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. at Birdseye Complex. Men's Club meeting Nov. 21

Historical Society meets



Robert Berthelson of Trumbull, will present an illustrated program "The President Did What? at the Stratford Historical Society meeting Friday, Nov. 21, 7 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 2000 Main St. The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served. Thanksgiving Eve service

The annual townwide Thanksgiving Eve service sponsored by the Trumbull Interfaith Committee will take place Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 8 at Christ the King Church, (with many Stratford members) 4700 Madison Ave. Trumbull. Clergy and choirs from Trumbull congregations will participate. The Rev. Dr. John Sandel, director of the Pastoral Counseling Center of Trumbull, will be the guest speaker. Those attending are asked to bring canned food for Trumbull Social Services. A reception will follow.

Aquarobics class registration

The recreation department is offering aquarobics, a high-energy aerobic class with low-impact, and body sculpting in chest-deep water at Flood Middle School Pool Monday and Wednesdays from 8:15 to 9 p.m. beginning Dec. 1. The class will run for eight weeks and the fee is $50. Registration is at the recreation office at Short Beach until Nov. 26, or online at www.townofstratford.com/recreation

Ella Grasso Pool closings

The Ella Grasso Pool will be closed Friday, Nov. 28, Wednesday, Dec. 24, Friday, Dec. 26 and Wednesday, Dec. 31. It will reopen Friday, Jan. 2 for therapeutic swim on Wednesdays and Fridays. The pool is handicap-accessible, and the temperature is 90 to 92 degrees. The pool is open Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents can attend the pool by obtaining a pass at the recreation office. The pass is $10 for 10 visits. Residents wishing to attend must have a doctor's clearance and the doctor must complete a medical form before they can register at the office at Short Beach. Holiday Vacation Camp

The recreation department is taking registration for the Holiday Vacation Camp Program, which will run Dec. 29 to 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Dec. 31, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Birdseye Complex. This program is for children ages 5 to 12 and will feature a trip to CocoKey Indoor Water Park in Waterbury, holiday-theme, sports, games and more. The cost of the program is $85. Vendors are invited to participate in Lordship Community Church's annual Christmas Fair. Toy and Adopt-A-Family

The annual Toy and Adopt-A-Family program is underway, sponsored by Stratford's Sterling House Community Center, in a project to provide new toys for children and support for families in need, according to Special Events Director Susan E. Koperwhats.

Over the last 25 years, the drive has collected toys for approximately 1,000 youngsters and has aligned volunteers with families to ensure that their needs are met to ensure a memorable holiday.

Adult education

Temple Beth Sholom continues its new adult education program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 22 with two classes that run at the synagogue, 275 Huntington Road, just north of Paradise Green. The first period from 10 to 11 a.m. is titled "Walking with Justice," is a discussion of the ethical impulse in Rabbinic Judaism. The session will be led by Rabbi Yvonne Youngberg and will explore what is meant by justice and the wide range of behaviors that come under the heading of social justice, as perceived by the rabbis. The second period is the synagogue's book club. This month's book to be discussed is Jodi Picoult's "My Sister's Keeper." The book explores the difficult choices a family must make when a child is diagnosed with a serious illness and the impact it has on each member of the family. Yugioh gives back Nov.

Openings in Sterling House Music program



Some openings remain in the expanded music program at Sterling House Community Center, where half-hour classes are offered in flute, guitar and piano, according to program director Raymond O'Donnell.



Flute lessons for youths and adults take place by appointment Monday evenings, taught by Suzan Maxey of Bridgeport, an instructor at Sterling House for 18 years.



Guitar instructor Darla A. Lupica of Milford, with 36 years of experience in guitar playing, also offers private lessons by appointment, and group lessons for all ages on Saturdays.



Piano lessons by appointment take place on Tuesdays for children 7 years and older. Instruction for adults is available during the week by appointment only. Tony Signore of Trumbull is the instructor.



Fees range from $20 to $30 per half hour and group guitar lessons are $15 per lesson. Sterling House memberships are required.

Food pickup volunteers needed







Individuals with mid-sized vehicles or pickup trucks are needed to collect food donations at least twice each month during daytime business hours for the Sterling House Community Center's Food Pantry, according to Raymond O'Donnell, program director and food pantry supervisor.



Volunteers should be able to lift items and carry them up and down stairs.

Discovery Museum and Planetarium exhibit open until Jan. 25



A blockbuster exhibition created by Academy Award-winning animatronics expert John Cox and his Creature Workshop crew will be on view through Jan. 25, 2009 at the Discovery Museum, 4450 Park Ave. in Bridgeport. A schedule for Saturday dance classes at Sterling House Community Center, 2283 Main Street, Stratford, has been announced by instructor Lauren A. Murray, as follows:



Toddler tap, ages 3-4; 8:30 a.m.; creative dance, pre-ballet and tap, ages 5-6, 9 a.m.; combo ballet and tap, ages 7-9, 9:30 a.m.; junior jazz/hip hop, ages 7-9, 10:30 a.m.; jazz/hip hop, ages 10-12, 11:15 a.m.

The dance program season will continue through May.



Murray, newly engaged as dance instructor at the center, is a recent graduate of Naugatuck Valley Community College. She started dancing at the age of three and, after studying at Carroll Farrell School of Dance and Stratford Academy of Dance, continued at the college level.

2009 Entertainment Books available at Baldwin Center



The Baldwin Center is sponsoring a fundraiser sale of Entertainment 2009 books. The reduced price is $25. There are many opportunities to save money with the book, such as fine and casual dining, airfare, hotels, car rentals, movies, sports, and cultural events. There are Fairfield and New Haven county editions available until Dec. 15.



Americorps seeking recruits for 2008-2009 program year



The Safe Neighborhoods AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) is seeking members for the upcoming 2008-2009 program year.



Participants in the SNAP program will gain valuable on-the-job training and experience a broad range of community service opportunities. Members volunteer their time providing services at local community sites and on the Safe Homes Team. Service may involve conducting safety inspections in homes, installing long-life smoke alarms, helping children or young adults, teaching emergency preparedness, providing community education, to name a few.



SNAP members earn stipends (full-time $11,200; part-time $5,300; reduced half-time $3,800; quarter-time $2,500; and minimum-time $1,700) and educational awards (full-time $4,725; part time $2,362.50; reduced half-time $1,800; quarter-time $1,250; and minimum-time $1,000). The educational award can be used for tuition payments at any college or university nationwide, or to repay an existing student loan. With full-time service, health care and childcare benefits are available. Recognized as a national model, SNAP is a public safety initiative of RYASAP.

This is a safety message for older adults and disabled individuals with mobility issues, difficulty with communication, or other special needs. Programs for children, youths at Sterling House



Nursery/pre-school, toddler play group, dance, yoga; beginner and advanced art, stencil, cartooning; flute, piano and guitar instruction, financial skills and Red Cross babysitting are among the fall classes for children and youths at Sterling House Community Center, 2283 Main Street, Stratford.



The nursery/pre-school for children 3 through 5 and the toddler play group for 2- and 3-year-olds are available for specific days, while those for school-age youths will be conducted after school and on Saturday mornings, conducted by local professional instructors, according to program director Raymond O'Donnell.



Also available are the ongoing volunteer programs, Youth in the Community, S.T.R.O.B.E. (Stratford Teens Reaching Out Beyond Education), the rent-a-kid program that helps youths earn money, and monthly events for special needs teens and youth adults.

YMCA Opens Before School Program at Franklin School



The YMCA is pleased to announce the opening of a Before School Child care site at Franklin School. This program, run in cooperation



with the Board of Education, will begin the first day of school. The site will open at 6:45 a.m. and will run until the start of the school day.



Activities include arts and crafts, games, and drawing. Students may also bring in their breakfast if they would like to.

Danish Sisterhood opens membership



Freden Lodge 12, the local Connecticut chapter of the Danish Sisterhood of America, is reaching out to all women of Danish descent, Danish by marriage, or to any who are interested in Danish culture. The lodge area covers everything south of Hartford, and all towns between the New York and Rhode Island borders and lodge members come from many locales. Charter Oak Education School looking for cars



Charter Oak Education, one of Connecticut's smallest nonprofit private schools, recently has started a car-donation program. They are able to turn old or even totaled cars into much needed funds for their school. Trucks, vans, boats, or RVs running or not also will be accepted. Tax receipts will be given. Boys & Girls Club car campaign



As summer approaches plans are under way for upcoming vacation weeks at Boys & Girls Clubs in Connecticut. In addition to regular indoor programs, many Boys and Girls Clubs have outdoor camping and lots of swimming hiking and boating. Much needed funds are created by the Boys & Girls Club Car Campaign and the funds will directly benefit kids. To donate a car, call 800-246-0493. All cars are needed and no restrictions apply.



Produce sought for food pantry



"As you plant your vegetable garden this year, please plant an extra row for clients of the Sterling House Food Pantry," is the message of Raymond O'Donnell, supervisor of the food pantry at Sterling House Community Center, 2283 Main Street, Stratford.



O'Donnell added, "Throughout the year, the pantry routinely provides thousands of area needy people with canned, bottled, packaged and frozen foods. But, like everyone, they would greatly appreciate also receiving fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers to enjoy."



People with food items to be donated to the food pantry can deliver them to Sterling House or call to make an appointment for a volunteer to pick up the items.



The food pantry provided emergency food assistance to individuals and families since 1992, funded by a start-up grant from the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County.

Private Swim Lessons



The Stratford Family YMCA has openings in its private lesson program. Private Lesson programs are a great way to introduce children as well as adults to the water environment. Private lessons also will get the participant to that next swim level or just to learn a stroke with the one on one care given by the certified instructor. The Stratford Aquatics Dept. caters to the participant's needs as well as the days and times that are requested by the participant. New programs



Lordship Community Church, 179 Prospect Boulevard, has instituted two new programs for young people. The first is the 10-station computer lab, which is used every Sunday at 10 a.m. during worship, to teach Bible lessons to Sunday school students. The computers were donated by a person who wishes to remain anonymous. Mrs. Sally Green, Sunday school superintendent, oversees each class. The second program is an attended nursery during worship with qualified adults to tend to infants and toddlers. Informational Workshop



St. Vincent's Parish Nurse Programs of Stratford and Connecticut In-Home Assistance will sponsor a free series of talks, Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mark's Parish Center, 500 Wigwam Lane. The event is open to the general public.



Schedule of talks: 10 a.m.: You Are What You Eat by Karen Novak, Nutritionist, St. Vincent's; 10:30 a.m.: Memory Loss-What is Normal by Ana Nelson, Alzheimer's Association; 11 a.m.: Medication Safety by Amanda Volpe, St. Vincent's Pharmacist; 12:15 p.m.: Scams Targeting Seniors, by the Stratford Police Dept./Crime Watch; 12:45: In-Home Care, Who Will Pay, by Diane Fekete, Connecticut In-Home Assistance; 1:30 p.m.: State Programs for Seniors, by Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging; 2 p.m.: Elder Law Issues by Charles Kurmay, Attorney at Law.

Family caregiver support group meeting



Atria Stratford offers a support group for family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease, or a related dementia, living at home or in an extended care facility, 6 to 7 p.m. at Atria Stratford Assisted Living, 6911 Main Street, Stratford



The support group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m
