Vehicle title fees, currently $15, will increase to $25 as of Jan. 1, according to Pottawattamie County Treasurer Judy Miller.
License registration fees for trailers weighing 2,000 pounds or less, now at $10, will increase to $20 effective on Jan. 1. These fees for trailers weighing more than 2,000 pounds, now at $10, will increase to $30.
"The biggest change is in pickups," Miller said.
License registration fees for trucks are based on weight. Currently, the license registration fee for a three-ton or lighter truck is $65. Effective Jan. 1, that fee will increase to $150.
Heavier trucks have higher fees. For example, the current license registration fee for a five-ton truck is $90. Effective on Jan. 1, that fee will increase to $180. The fee for a seven-ton truck, now at $130, will increase to $215 and so on.
Miller said that for those who must renew their annual registration on their trucks or trailers in December, they will pay the current fee if it's done that month. However, if these people wait until January to pay - Iowa motorists are given a 30-day grace period after their due date - they will have to pay the new, higher fee, she emphasized.
People who own regular cars will not see any increase in their license registration fees come Jan. 1, she said. There is, however, a change these owners will notice down the road.
Currently, car owners begin paying a lesser amount on their registration fees after their cars are five years old. Under this new law, however, car owners won't begin paying a lower amount until their cars are seven years old, Miller said.
