Write-in vote planned in New Paltz

NEW PALTZ - There will be a write-in election on Tuesday to fill a vacant seat on the Town Board.

Nick Cartagena resigned from the seat in the spring. Ken Wishnick was appointed to the vacancy but later resigned, too.

The winner of Tuesday's election will serve for one year.

Judicial candidate voter guide is online

KINGSTON - The New York State Unified Court System has published a nonpartisan online voter guide with information about candidates for judgeships.

The guide contains biographical information provided by candidates, including occupation, educational and professional history, and a short personal statement.

The guide can be found at www.nycourts.gov/vote.

Tivoli Halloween party at firehouse

TIVOLI - The village Recreation Committee will host its annual Halloween celebration from 5-7 tonight at the Tivoli Firehouse.

Festivities will include pumpkin painting, games, refreshments, a bonfire, music and a costume parade up Broadway.

Candy exchange will benefit troops

POUGHKEEPSIE - The Dutchess County Department of Health will join with several community organizations to host its third annual Great Halloween Candy Exchange from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Children can donate up to a pound of Halloween trick-or-treat candy to be shipped to U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as those in local veterans' hospitals. In exchange, children will receive an age-appropriate book or a family fun pass to Dutchess County YMCA or All Sport/Fishkill.

In Northern Dutchess, families can bring their candy to the Children's Medical Group, 4252 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park.

Ulster communities host Obama rallies

KINGSTON - Ulster County Democrats and Hudson Valley for Obama are planning campaign rallies for Sunday in the following communities:

* Kingston, 11 a.m., Dietz Stadium.

* New Paltz, noon, Peace Park.

* Ellenville, 1:45 p.m., location to be determined

* Woodstock, 3 p.m., village green.

* Boiceville, 4 p.m., Boiceville Inn.

Speakers are expected to include U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, state Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, D-Kingston, Ulster County executive candidate Michael Hein and county comptroller candidate Elliot Auerbach.

Riverfront revitalization focus of conference

WEST POINT - A daylong conference focusing on ways to assist riverfront communities in the Hudson Valley in revitalization efforts is planned Nov. 12 at the Thayer Hotel at West Point.

The session, "Hudson's Riverfront: The Next 400 Years," will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Historic Hudson River Towns, which organized the conference, hope to bring together public officials, entrepreneurs, industry and civic leaders, developers, and citizens to discuss topics ranging from how municipalities can spur recreation of vibrant downtowns to green redevelopment.

Scouts will honor horse show company chief

TOWN OF ULSTER - Thomas G. Struzzieri will receive the Clement I. Angstrom Distinguished Citizen Award from the The Rip Van Winkle Council, Boy Scouts of America, at an awards dinner Nov. 13 at Wiltwyck Golf Club.

The award is presented annually to a person who has provided exceptional service to the community.

Struzzieri is president and chief executive officer of Saugerties-based HITS Inc., the largest hunter/jumper horse show management company in the United States.

Also to be honored will be Douglas R. Whitaker of West Hurley, who will receive the Harold Harrison Distinguished Scouters Award for nearly four decades of volunteer service to the Rip Van Winkle Council.

Tickets for the 2008 Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner are $100 per person and include dinner, cash bar, entertainment and a viewing of auction items. The reception and auction viewing will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner to follow at 7 p.m.

Ulster BOCES grads will receive diplomas

PORT EWEN - Sixty adult students from across Ulster County are eligible to receive their General Educational Development (GED) diplomas at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in the gymnasium of the Ulster BOCES Center for Alternative Education, U.S. Route 9W.

State Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, D-Kingston, will speak.

Each of the graduates will present a single red rose to the person who was most supportive and made a difference in the student's life.

Shandaken becomes Greenway community

KINGSTON - The Ulster County town of Shandaken is among three new communities to join the Hudson River Valley Greenway.

The number of participating communities continues to grow and has now reached 250 of 320 eligible communities within the state-designated Greenway area, according to Mark Castiglione, acting executive director of the Greenway.

The other new communities are the town of Ford Edward in Washington County and the town of Moreau in Saratoga County.

Authors guest speakers at Vassar College

POUGHKEEPSIE - Authors and New York Times Book Review contributors Rob Nixon and Anne McClintock will give lectures in November at Vassar College.

At 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, Nixon will discuss his upcoming book "Slow Violence, Gender, and Environmental Time" in Room 203 of Taylor Hall.

At 5:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at the same location, McClintock will discuss her upcoming book "Paranoid Empire: Specters of Guantanamo Bay."

POUGHKEEPSIE - Poughkeepsie Day School will host an admissions information session in the Gilkeson Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, for families of students interested in learning about the school's program.

Poughkeepsie Day School, 260 Boardman Road, was founded in 1934 by members of Vassar College's Child Study Department, is an independent college-preparatory school for 325 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Yahoo researcher speaks on ad experiment

POUGHKEEPSIE - Yahoo research scientist David H. Reiley Jr. will deliver the 2008 Martin H. Crego lecture in economics at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Vassar College.

"Retail Advertising Works! Measuring the Effects of Advertising on Sales via a Controlled Experiment on Yahoo!" is free and open to the public. The lecture will be held in the Spitzer Auditorium of Sanders Hall.

Reiley is an experimental economics and industrial organization professor at the University of Arizona, where he has taught since 2001. He has taken a leave of absence from the university to examine the economics of advertising at Yahoo! Research, a branch of the search engine that develops marketing ideas.

Leeds Post Office hosts passort fair Nov. 8

LEEDS - The U.S. Postal Service will host a passport fair and accept passport applications from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Leeds Post Office, 1155 Main St.

The fee for first-time applicants is $100 - $75 to the Department of State and $25 to the Postal Service. Photo not included. The fee for a passport renewal is $75. Postal officials can take photographs for an additional $15.

Passports will be mailed to the customer four to six weeks after application.

Rosendale waste station closes for holidays

ROSENDALE - The Town of Rosendale Transfer Station will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 4, for Election Day, and will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

The station will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veteran's Day, and will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
