The UCHS marching band practices for Saturday’s big event.
_________________________
The annual District Four Marching Band Performance Assessment will take place at the Union County High School football stadium this Saturday, Oct. 18, beginning at 1 p.m. and will last throughout the evening.
There will be 15 bands made up of more than 1,000 band students from high schools in the District 4 area which include Union, Bradford, Alachua, Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy and parts of Clay counties. The bands that will perform throughout the day and their families and friends will remain until the ratings are announced at 6:30 p.m., so it will be very, very crowded.
UCHS Band Director Kelly Dorsey describes the event as the FCAT for bands. There are six judges who, using association guidelines, will rate each band's performance on the football field as either superior, excellent, good, fair or poor. The UCHS band has received straight superiors for more than 20 years.
The District Four Florida Bandmasters Association elected Union County as the alternate site for hosting the band assessment event because the regular host, Columbia High School, is currently undergoing renovations. Dorsey said this will be a huge event for Union County.
Extra stadium seating is being brought in for the event. In addition to the two permanent concession stands, multiple food stands will be in place around the stadium offering a variety of food choices such as BBQ sandwiches, pizza, burgers, sausage dogs, chili and chicken.
Nearly 200 volunteers have already signed up to help, including 30 members of the Tau Beta Sigma UF band service sorority and Kappa Kappa Tsi fraternity.
"I am so impressed with Union County and how people with no ties to the band have stepped up and offered to volunteer. I can't thank them enough," Dorsey said.
General admission price for guests is $8 per person. Children 5 and under are free. There will be a volunteer check-in table by the ticket gate the day of the event.
To volunteer, please contact Dorsey as soon as possible at (386) 496-2045 or by emailing dorseyk@union.k12.fl.us.
