Jammin' on the Square this weekend

HARLAN -- The 7th-annual Jammin' on the Square celebration in Harlan kicks off Saturday with an exciting format, a variety of new bands and something for everyone in the family. For the seventh year, music lovers will converge on the square in Harlan to enjoy one day of entertainment provided by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. The Jammin' on the Square event began in 2002 as a way to bring culture and tourism to Shelby County, and has evolved into a celebrated new tradition, held by the south courthouse steps. Scaled back to one day once again this year as opposed to the two-day format in previous years, Dawn Cundiff, Shelby County Chamber Executive Director, said the day will provide for an abundance of entertainment, food, activities, crafts and carriage rides on the downtown square in Harlan. "For one day we've got it jam-packed with everything," Cundiff said. "We think we have a good variety of music, lots of neat events this year and a fun, festive atmosphere with great music. It's such a great event." The day kicks off with a fun walk/run and bike ride that begins in the downtown area. There will be a five mile or two mile run, and a two mile walk. There also will be a 20 mile, 30 mile and 40 mile bicycle poker ride. Registration is from 7-8 a.m. Saturday downtown with the walk, run and bicycle ride to follow. Trophies will be awarded. Musical entertainment kicks off at 1 p.m. with the Harlan Community High School Jazz Band. Musical acts during the day will include everything from swing and jazz to big-band era music and modern rock and roll/alternative music. Among the acts besides the HCHS Jazz Band are Live Jazz, a Frank Sinatra impersonator, Sentimental Swing, SistaMattix and Fork in the Road. For the second year in a row there will be an admission charge to enter the Jammin' area, although a portion of the afternoon music will be free. The free entertainment will include the high school jazz band and Live Jazz. Admission following the first two music groups will be $5, and will include a free raffle ticket for Nintendo Wii. Children up to 12 years old are admitted free with a parent. Car show, vendors Cundiff said there will be a bounce house for kids and a host of vendors are planned with crafts and food, in addition to the international food flavors already found in downtown Harlan. Restaurants will be open on the downtown square. Merchants also will be open during the day. Cundiff said persons wanting to shop won't be charged admission, but if they elect to stay downtown and listen to the bands, they'll be asked to pay. "It's basically on the honor system," she said. Merchants are offering a Poker shopping run, with prizes. There will be a beverage garden hosted by Ye Ole Westside Lounge beginning at 4 p.m., and Cundiff said no alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the square except in the beverage garden. Cundiff also said t-shirts are available with the Jammin' logo on them. They will be on display downtown Saturday. Raffle tickets for the Nintendo Wii are available at the Chamber and Shelby County State Bank West Branch. In addition, this year Jammin' on the Square has added the Tiny Lund Car Show to its venue. The combination of the two events have been well received, said Cundiff. There is going to be a permanent change with the car show as Tiny Lund will be dropped from the name in future years. "This will especially help with the confusion on the different dates with the races and car show," she said. The show is a judged event with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m., with entrance for the cars on 7th and Market Sts. Registration forms for the car show as well as the poker bike ride and walk/run are on the Chamber's web site at www.exploreshelbycounty.com. Awards are sponsored by local businesses and the presentation will be at 3 p.m. "It's going to be another wonderful event," said Cundiff, who added that she hopes everyone will come downtown for the day. We are very excited about this new format, and the committee has really done an outstanding job getting this all organized."
