On 13th try, Panora native Kip Janvrin, 35, becomes oldest decathlete to win US title
      The oldest ever to win a U.S. decathlon title, Panora native Kip Janvrin 35, scored the fourth highest total of his long career in winning with 8,241 points at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon June 21-22.

      On his 13th attempt at the USA championship, Kip finally came away a winner and added to his world record of 33 decathlon wins and 63 meets over 7,000 points. He is the US record holder for most 8,000 point decathlon scores, 26. It was his 76th career decathlon.

      Kip overcame an 87 point deficit and third place position in the standings entering the final event, the 1500 meter run. His second day score of 4,211 points was the second best of his career. He won three events in the competition: the 400, javelin and 1500 meters.

      Results for the 10 events were: 100--10.98; long jump-23'0"; shot put-46'7.5"; high jump-6'2.25"; 400-48.41; high hurdles-14.72; discus-149'7"; pole vault-17'3/4"; javelin-198'2"; 1500-4:14.96.

      By winning the US title, Kip now will compete in the world championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Monday and Tuesday, August 6 and 7.
