Hinchey due in court to answer harassment complaint

ROSENDALE - A September court date has been set for U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey to answer a harassment charge.

According to the Rosendale Town Court Clerk's Office, the Hurley Democrat is scheduled to appear in court at 5 p.m. Sept. 9. No other details were contained in the court's computer, including the name of the person filing the complaint, the office said.

Paul Lendvay, 46, of Rosendale, the chairman of the Catskill Regional Friends of the National Rifle Association, had said earlier this month he expected to file a complaint against Hinchey, claiming the congressman smacked him in the head July 19 during the town's street fair.

A Hinchey spokesman has said there is "absolutely no truth or validity to the claim" being made by Lendvay. Neither Hinchey nor a spokesman could be reached Monday.

Lendvay, who also could not be reached Monday, had said that at the time of the alleged incident, he was manning an NRA table at the fair, selling tickets to an NRA banquet and raffle tickets for two firearms.

He said Hinchey approached the table and picked up one of the guns to look at it. Lendvay said he told the congressman to put the rifle down - noting that part of the NRA's agreement with Rosendale police was that no one except the people manning the table would be allowed to touch the weapons - and that when Hinchey "took his sweet time" in obliging, an argument ensued.

During the argument, Lendvay said, Hinchey approached him where he sat and "hit me on the top of my head."

Hinchey's spokesman questioned Lendvay's motives in making the allegation public nearly three weeks after the fact, and speculated Lendvay was trying to plant a negative story in the press prior to the election.

Responding to Mr. Kelly and Ms. Sperl
Mr. Kelly, what's this stuff about "courage of (my) convictions...?" Call the Rosendale police chief. I filed an affidavit swearing the same as I always have regarding this incident. If the judge wants me, he'll call me. Want to go to court WITH me? Give me a ride. I'd be DELIGHTED. Bet YOU don't have the guts. And, Ms. Sperl, while out getting signatures (1,776) for my petition (the Republican and Democrat each needed only 1,000), I met a woman (and her husband) who so detested "my schoolmate, Maurice," she admitted "I routinely beat him up." Incidentally, I have her name. I'm confident that she would corroborate it for you.

PS: In his TV commercial, Mr. Bernardo claims to be "a member of the IndepenDENT Party. He LIES. There is NO SUCH "Party." Maybe I shouldn't have told him of the overwhelmingly-positive response I get when I tell voters I'm a pure i ndependent. Voters, no matter what affiliation, CAN'T WAIT to be rid of Party bosses: Bernardo would have THREE bosses: Republican (who was SCARED to put up a Republican, so he annointed an Independence Party member!), Independence and Conservative; and Democrat: Democrat Party Boss and Working Families Party Boss.

Granted, I'll have 182,000 (yes, thousand!) "bosses": every man, woman and child in Ulster County.

Edith, the Maurice you knew and loved left town a long time ago. Well, probably about 7 and a 1/2 year ago. He is little more than an angry frustrated old man, someone who acts more lke an activist than a respected member of the US House, who needs to reenter private life and start collecting Social Security. Maybe he can take advantage of "Save them Now" who specializes in reentry.

He does little for the good of his constituency, the money he brings in from DC goes to a select few, who agree with his political ideaology.
