In the second game, Steven White scattered 10 hits and Brett Gardner had a double and triple in a 5-2 and a sweep of the double-header.
Yankees starting pitcher Ian Kennedy worked just the first inning of the first game, throwing just 12 pitches and allowing only a leadoff single to top Pirates prospect Andrew McCutchen, before hitting the showers.
It is expected that Kennedy will be the starter for the New York Yankees as they close out their four-game series at Tampa Bay on Thursday.
“The way our pitching was tonight, we knew if we could get some sort of lead, our pitching would give us a good chance to win,” Eric Duncan said. “Our bullpen did a great job, like they did all year. It’s just a matter of getting that big hit.”
Scott Strickland, Scott Patterson, Billy Traber, David Robertson and Steven Jackson combined to work the final nine innnings in relief of Kennedy, allowing just one run on five hits.
Robertson wound up with his first Triple-A win, with Jackson earning his first Triple-A save.
“We have a tremendous bullpen, and they delivered again,” Duncan added. “We were able to scratch out a couple of runs.”
In the nightcap, the Yankees added two more in the six, one a a lead-off home run by first baseman Juan Miranda, his third of the year.
