X Trials return possible

BRISTOL -- ESPN is considering bringing the X Trials back to Lake Compounce next summer, a company spokesman said.

Mike Soltys, a spokesman for the sports media giant, said that despite the Sunday downpour, crowds were good for the Father's Day weekend contest.

"This event went very well for us," said Soltys, calling Friday and Saturday an "outstanding success."

ESPN estimated the crowds at nearly 30,000 over the weekend, with about 8,100 on Friday, 20,500 and 500 on Sunday, which was ultimately canceled because of the rain.

The "weather you can't do anything about," said Soltys. "That's certainly not a reflection on Bristol."

ESPN likes to do events like the X Trials two years in a row in a location, according to Soltys.

"We've gone a lot of places two years," he said.

Soltys said it is "premature" to say the company will bring the contest back here next year, but he said ESPN would certainly look at the possibility of returning.

"We have to talk to Lake Compounce and Bristol and Southington officials," said Soltys.

ESPN was happy with the amusement park as a venue, according to Soltys.

"Lake Compounce was a great host to work with," said Soltys, adding that the park "did a very professional job for us."

Tom Wages, general manager of Lake Compounce, said hosting the X Trials was "great."

"It was a really good event for the area," said Wages. "A lot of people turned out to see it and enjoy it."

The X Trials, Wages said, introduced new people to the amusement park. He said there may have been people who postponed their trip to the park if they weren't interested in the sporting event.

But Wages said he has no doubt that he'd like to see the X Trials return.

"I'm very positive about it," Wages said.

Sunday's washout meant that some of the skateboarding, inline skating and bicycle stunt riding competition never happened.

ESPN officials said the athletes' scores from previous contests will be used to determine eligibility to the Summer X Games, to be held in Philadelphia in August.

Given that the skies cleared Sunday evening, Soltys said, "Had the weather cleared just a little bit earlier, there would have been a competition."

ESPN plans to air the best from the Bristol competition in the coming weeks, but some adjustments will be made because some of the contests weren't held, Soltys said

The coverage will rely heavily on the preliminary rounds for some events, Soltys said, and additional interviews.

There will also be coverage of an award ceremony that some of the bicycle stunt riders held at a Plainville hotel, according to Soltys.

"We sent a crew and shot it," he said, with the intention of using "snippets."

Instead, because no bicycle stunt park competition was held, Soltys said, there will be much more of that ceremony shown.

Fund-raising for The V Foundation "took a hit" because of the rain, Soltys said.

But he said the silent auction still did well, raising $500 for a Tony Hawk skateboard signed by Hawk and his entire tour and $610 for a package that included two tickets to the ESPYs, some merchandise and a framed poster.

A tour of ESPN, along with some ESPN shirts, netted $250, Soltys said.
