This photograph shows a lighted Strand Theatre at dusk on Britton's Main Street. The theatre was featured in the film "Small Town Silver Screen" produced by Britton native Bryce Jarrett. The film debuted at the Strand last weekend and will be featured on the South Dakota Public Broadcasting television channel on June 16 at 8 p.m.
Despite blizzard conditions on opening night, a total of 162 people attended the debut of "Small Town Silver Screen" at the Strand Theatre in Britton last weekend.
The film was produced, directed, and edited by Britton native Bryce Jarrett and was a documentary of the history of small-town theaters in 12 South Dakota communities including Britton, Bryant, Webster, Mitchell, Gregory, Platte, Armour, Tripp, Viborg, Redfield, Faulkton, and Dell Rapids.
Plans call for the film to also show at the Capitol Theatre in Aberdeen Thursday through Sunday this week at 7:30 p.m. with a 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinee. Showing are planned in Platte on May 6-7 and Mitchell on May 8.
The film will also be featured on South Dakota Public Broadcasting on Monday, June 16, at 8 p.m.
DVD's of the movie were sold out at Strand Theatre over the weekend but will still be available at the Strand or at the Farmer's Union Insurance office for $10.
"I was happy that people laughed when I thought they should laugh," said Jarrett, who actually put together his first movie with some friends in high school that was actually shown at the Strand Theatre. "It was kind of neat to see a large crowd react to the film.
"Even with the foul weather on Friday that kept a lot of people away on opening night, we had really good crowds," added Jarrett. "I'd like to thank everyone who did come out."
Jarrett, who had been working out of the Britton area, will now be working with a production company out of Sioux Falls. Much of his work will be focused on television commercials and short video projects.
