Athletes bring out Father's Day spirit at events

BRISTOL -- The spirit of Father's Day was apparent yesterday in Lake Compounce at the X Trials, as athletes brought their dads or their own sons out for a day of competition and fun.

With 7-year-old Riley skateboarding by his side, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk made the most of his time with his son at the Trials to enjoy some father-son moments.

With fans screaming "Tony!" in the crowd and asking for autographs, Hawk ignored and pushed away many requests to watch and give pointers to Riley, who excitedly rode back and forth the empty pipe.

When asked what Riley was getting him for Father's Day today, he said "I don't think he realizes it [is Father's Day] while we're on tour."

But that didn't stop him from showing his fatherly side.

Riley then tried to drop down from the bike half pipe, but was scared of its immense height. As any good father does, Hawk yelled from the bottom of the pipe that it's not that high and not to be scared.

"It's just like the bowl you rode in last week. Riley, don't cry," Tony said to his son, as the boy sat down in disappointment and tears. His dad quickly raced up the stairs to the top of the pipe to give some more fatherly counsel.

Later, another show of paternal support could be seen as Yuki Yasutoko, father of Eito and Takeshi, the two Japanese in-line skating vertical brothers, watched with video camera ready from the press area in front of the halfpipe.

When asked about what his sons are getting him for Father's Day, he replied, "Father what?" His sons were more aware and understanding of this American tradition. The brothers couldn't gettheir father anything, but managed to place second and third at the vert finals event. Winning the event will be "a good present for my father," Eito Yasutoko said after the competition.

With video camera still in hand, their dad watched on as they each received a Connecticut license plate award in front of a large and excited crowd at the awards ceremony.

In the audience of thousands on the second day of ESPN's extreme sports competition, plenty of fathers and their children could be seen hand-in-hand also enjoying the day's events.
