WOODBURY - The Board of Selectmen, at its Thursday, April 10, meeting, approved closing Upper Grassy Hill Road from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, April 28, for the filming of scenes for an untitled Sam Mendes movie project.

Mr. Mendes directed "American Beauty" and "Road to Perdition." According to the Internet Movie Database website, the untitled project features actor John Krasinski and actress Toni Collette.

The plot is about a couple expecting their first child, who travel around the U.S. trying to find the perfect place to start their family.

In other business, First Selectman Paul Hinckley said the $200,000 grant for the old Town Hall improvements was approved by the Historic Preservation Commission of the state Commission on Culture and Tourism.

The funds come from the state Commission on Culture and Tourism's Capital Improvement Grant Program.

Mr. Hinckley said the executive committee of the Historic Preservation Commission will meet in May, when final approval of the grant will be acted on.

A $30,000 Local Capital Improvement grant was awarded to the town by the state for improvements to Rowley Road.

Mr. Hinckley told Voices the grant will cover enlarging the culvert, fixing drainage issues, resurfacing the road and installing guardrails.

The board also received $1,000 from Hiram Peck, Jr., and $100 from Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gilette, Jr., for the old Town Hall Restoration Fund.

In October 2007, the Board of Selectmen, then consisting of First Selectman Dick Crane and Selectmen Mr. Bartlett and Mr. Hinckley, encouraged residents to donate to the newly formed fund.

Selectmen approved Haeley Property of Litchfield to do spring and fall clean-up, pruning mulching, trimming of town property and North Green and mowing. The cost estimate provided by Haeley Property is $42,660.

Civil One was approved to design a septic system and percolation tests for the former Senior Community Center at 7 Mountain Rd.

The cost quoted by Civil One was $500.

A $744 bid by Stewart Mechanical Services to relocate a thermostat from the pool table room to the small activity room at the new Senior Community Center was accepted.

The following people were appointed to the Economic Development Ad Hoc Committee: Walter Dierks, James Frey, Connie Jones, Gary Lamoureux, Gail Lettick, Max Schlicher, Ray Villanova, Charles Ericson and Leslie Lebl.

Selectman George Hale is chairman.

The next Board of Selectmen meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Shove Building Conference Room, 281 Main St. South.
