Luther Midelfort Northland's pulmonary rehabilitation recently joined rehabilitation and long-term care programs across the country in adding a fun twist to its treatment plan with the Nintendo Wii.

This popular interactive video game system allows patients to have fun as a part of therapy. Program participants play games like bowling, tennis, golf and boxing to improve balance, coordination and strength. They hope to eventually acquire a dance mat game for the program. "Our patients didn't realize how much muscle was actually involved," said registered respiratory therapist Jenna Green. The Wii system creates a new experience for participants with the same activity level and keeps them motivated. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a 12-week program led by respiratory care practitioners. It is designed to help participants with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to reduce respiratory symptoms and enhance their ability to perform daily living activities. It also features speakers in specialties such as dietetics, social services, and pharmacy. Education sessions are followed by a period of low-impact exercise tailored to each patient's ability and goals. Patients may be referred from their family physician.
