Ridgeland-Chetek Cooperative and Rice Lake Farmers Cooperative officially merged March 1 to become the newly formed Lakeland Cooperative. Karl Varnes, former manager at Ridgeland-Chetek Co-op, has now taken on the lead role of running the new joint venture.
Varnes said that both operations were profitable at the time, but the decision to combine forces was made in order to ensure future stability. In particular, the co-ops wanted to make sure their stockholders (approximately 1,000 strong) would continue to receive the equity payments they are entitled to.
Customers shouldn't notice any change in service due to the merger, Varnes said. The new arrangement mostly affects the supply side of the organization, making it easier to get good prices on agronomy and petroleum products. Offices and staffing won't be affected.
