Christ Church Episcopal has recently welcomed new celebrant and preacher, Reverend Susan McCone, and with her a new era for the church located on the historic Watertown Green.
Rev. McCone came to Christ Church five weeks ago; she had previously served for a year at St. John's Episcopal Church in Bristol.
Rev. McCone's arrival at Christ Church comes after a long and unique path to her current position as a celebrant and preacher. She hails from St. Paul, Minnesota, and currently resides in Washington, Conn. Rev. McCone has been ordained for five years, following the recommendation of her bishop. In 1994, Rev. McCone enrolled at the Yale Divinity School.
"I thought I was simply going to study ethics, but it became apparent that a change in my life had taken place," said Rev. McCone.
Rev. McCone, who holds a law degree from Columbia University and practiced law for seven and a half years, was operating a retail business in New York City at the time, and soon decided to explore a career path which would align with her faith. Now, the passion and devotion to her Episcopalian beliefs have begun to invigorate the parishioners of Christ Church.
Rev. McCone said that parishioners of the church who had stopped attending services have come back to worship at Christ Church.
Some claimed that prior leadership had become "too strict and literal in their interpretation of Biblical authority," noted Rev. McCone.
Rev. McCone encapsulated her experience thus far at the Christ Church, saying, "it is a beautiful church with really wonderful people who are happy that it is squarely back in the fold of the Episcopal Church." She said she hopes to soon have a thriving church youth group, noting that "the best part is that there are young people who want to join the church."
