LAKE CARMEL-A police officer never knows what he or she is getting involved in.

Sgt. Carl Champagne of the Kent Police Department found that out first hand last week when investigating a report of a person revving his vehicle's engine outside the "Stop Drop and Sold" ebay Consignment Shop on Route 52 in Lake Carmel, resulting in the vehicle repeatedly backfiring, and causing sound nuisance.

Champagne arrived at the shop last Thursday afternoon and went inside to speak with the proprietor regarding the allegation.

While inside the shop, the veteran officer observed three new Street Wise Security Company 200,000 volt electronic stun guns offered for sale.

Thomas Stracuzza, 31, of Yorktown was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was released without bail pending a Jan. 16 court hearing in Kent Town Court.

Champagne seized the guns as evidence.

New York State law prohibits the possession of stun guns and related weapons.

After receiving tips that illegal weapons were being purchased on ebay, the Attorney General's office began an investigation last year and purchased 16 stun guns from 16 different dealers around the eastern U.S. through the eBay auction website.

New York has become one of seven states that ban electronic stunning devices. Possession of such a weapon is a misdemeanor since the devices are designed to stun, knock out or paralyze a person by means of high voltage electric shock.
