Tomorrow is Cribbs' last chance to earn votes

BEREA -- Ted Daisher has been coaching in the NFL for four years and prior to that held various coaching jobs at colleges and high schools east of the Mississippi for 24 years.

The Browns' special teams coach said he has never seen a player that can return punts and kicks and then cover punts and kicks with the relish Josh Cribbs displays.

''From my perspective, there is no one who can do all the things that Josh can do,'' Daisher said yesterday. ''Is Devin Hester a great kick and punt returner? Yes, Devin Hester is phenomenal. I've yet to see Devin Hester go down on kickoff and hit the wedge right in the mouth. That's not what he does.''

The game tomorrow against the Jets in Giants Stadium is Cribbs' last chance to influence Pro Bowl voting. Cribbs is nominated as a kick returner (he leads the league with a 31.2 average) and as a special teams player for the way he covers kicks and punts. Cribbs leads the Browns with 17 special teams tackles.

Cribbs has returned two kicks for touchdowns, one less than Jets return specialist Leon Washington. But as thrilling as it was to scoop up a bouncing ball and race goal line to goal line against the Steelers, Cribbs said he got a bigger charge from throwing a two-point conversion to Kellen Winslow Jr. in Arizona.

''I'd have to say that two-point conversion was more fun because it was out of the norm,'' Cribbs said. ''It was doing what I love -- being a QB. I got to showcase some of my skills. I'm really excited about that.''

Hank Fraley snapped the ball directly to Cribbs after a touchdown by Braylon Edwards made the score 21-16. Cribbs made it look as though he planned to run and then fired the conversion to Winslow.

It's cold inside!

Practice was conducted in the field house for the third straight day because of snow on the outdoor practice fields. Just to make sure players did not get too comfortable, all the doors to the outside were opened wide.

''Somebody pay the heating bill around here,'' a joking Shaun Smith said.

Offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski looked ready to go tobogganing. Quarterback Derek Anderson, loose as limp spaghetti, cracked Chudzinski looked like Ralphy from the movie Christmas Story.

Closing in on 100

Phil Dawson has scored 98 points this season. If he scores two more, he will become the first player in Browns history to have four seasons scoring 100 or more points. If he scores 29 points he will break the franchise record of points in a season set when Jim Brown scored 21 touchdowns in 1965.

Center Hank Fraley will make his 100th career start tomorrow.

Injury report

Seven Browns are listed as questionable on the injury report. Tight end Steve Heiden (ankle), nose tackle Ethan Kelly (knee), linebacker David McMillan (knee), linebacker Antwan Peek (knee), end Orpheus Roye (knee) and cornerback Eric Wright (knee) were limited in practice. Wide receiver Tim Carter missed practice with an illness.

Tackle Kevin Shaffer (knee) and defensive end Robaire Smith (neck) are probable.

Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery (finger) is doubtful. Wide receiver Laveranues Coles (ankle) is questionable.
