WASHINGTON - Archaeologist Ernest Wiegand will present a lecture on Rockshelter Archaeology in Western Connecticut for the Litchfield Hills Archaeology Club at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, December 9, in the Research Building of the Institute for American Indian Studies, 38 Curtis Rd.
Professor Wiegand's presentation and accompanying slides will recount his 30-year experience excavating prehistoric Native American rock shelters in and around Fairfield County.
Professor Wiegand directs the Norwalk Community College Archaeology as an avocation program. In 1975, with assistance from the National Endowment of the Humanities, he helped organize what has become a model college curriculum and community resource.
Students learn stewardship and historic preservation and participate in local excavations, as well as learning research methods and laboratory techniques.
He teaches courses in archaeological techniques, geology and historical archaeology.
Many of Ernest Wiegand's students have continued on to become distinguished archaeologists and community educators in their own right.
The Litchfield Hills Archaeology Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Sunday of the month in the Research Building of the Institute for American Indian Studies.
The public is welcome to attend the December 9 program. There is a $5 fee per lecture for non-members.
