Two men suspected of burglarizing a residence in a southern Pasadena subdivision were shot and killed by a nearby resident Wednesday afternoon, police said. This, after the elderly man confronted the pair with a firearm in the 7400 block of Timberline in the Village Grove East neighborhood. The owners of the targeted home were out at the time of the incident. Capt. A.H. Corbett said the alleged shooter called authorities to report a burglary in progress next door around 2 p.m. "The resident heard what apparently sounded to him like breaking glass," said Corbett. "He assumed that there was possibly a burglary in progress, and he found the source of the disturbance was right next door to his residence." The man went outside armed with what authorities believe may have been a shotgun and attempted to stop the suspects, who reportedly refused to comply as they exited the neighbors' backyard. He allegedly fired two rounds at the men. Both were fatally wounded. "One of the suspects expired on the north side of the street while the other died a little further south," said Corbett. Authorities stated one man allegedly carried some property as the pair made their way out of the home. The victims were two black males. Upon arrival, police found them lying in pools of blood. Law enforcement questioned the man. It is unknown what repercussions he will face, but law enforcement officials explained that it is possible that a Harris County grand jury will look into the matter. Police reported the area had been secured and traffic was heavy because of a couple of street closures. Students from Dabbs Elementary School and Fairmont Junior High School that lived in the neighborhood of the shooting were kept at their school while school officials contacted their parents to have them pick up their children. Students from Deer Park High School North and South Campuses were in route to the neighborhood just after the shooting so one bus was routed to Dabbs and another went to Fairmont Elementary School. They were held there until the school officials at those campuses could contact their parents to have them pick them up at those schools. Residents were shocked at what took place at their doorstep, a seldom occurrence in the described "quiet neighborhood". "It is kind of hard to get away from that kind of stuff," said Isabelle Yanez. "It is all around us. It is just part of life nowadays, unfortunately. It is a wake-up call, I guess." An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Added: Tuesday December 04, 2007 at 10:11 AM EST Justifiable Shooting? Hello, I live in Kansas and I would like to applaud the defensive actions of the genttleman that protected his neighborhood. I would hope it is reviewed in the 911 transcript that he did not refer to the criminals as any particular race. This shows a definite nonracial motivation for his course of actions. I know the taking of any life is a difficult decision, but the police cannot be everywhere at once and I choose to defend myself, family and neighbors. May God's blessings be on your community during this time of decision and guide your choices. My condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathy for the knowledge of their loved ones poor choice of a criminal life. Prayers for the man defending his neighborhood during the difficult time of dealing with the his actions are offered from me and my family. Sincerely, Jay Atkin EMT-I Kansas Added: Monday December 03, 2007 at 08:05 PM EST Pasadena/Deer Park my home Pasadena/Deer Park is my home and aways will be, Joe Horn had every right to use deadly force, you better believe all of Pasadena/Deer Park have guns in their home. This is are inherit right to carry a fire arm. Any person breaking into my fathers home, will get shot too. If more people in Houston, would carry guns, we would have less crime. Over the past few years our murder rate in Houston has escallated. The only reason I live in Houston is to go to school. But, I will be going home soon...... Let this be a lesson, if you commit a crime in our neighbor hood, most likely you will get shot. If the police would have shown up, they would have had guns drawn too. Racist or not racist, don't break into our homes. We work very hard for what we have. Anyone on this blog, if it was your house, you would feel violated, if you have never been broken into then you do not know the feeling. I have had items stolen out of my house. I couldn't sleep at night, eat or feel safe. I sleep with a bat near my bed. Quanell X needs to go to hell. Stop blabering and do something, I don't see you at the soup kitchens at thanksgiving or christmas, I don't see you at the homeless shelters in Houston, trying to help. All you do is get on TV, like you are a drama queen. "See I am saving my race". Why don't you come in and help with Katrina victims, I haven't seen you in new orleans, helping with houses. I don't see you do anything constructive, but flap your jaws. You remember this, when you start helping the poor then I will stop talking mess about you. Added: Monday December 03, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST Stealing is never OK. We weren't there, so we can't judge if Mr Horn felt life-threatening danger or not. But he had every right to stop those men until the police got there. Maybe if the police weren't so busy running speed traps, one of them would've been there sooner. Those two thieves had the choice to break, enter, steal, and then stop when a shotgun was pointed at them. Give me a break. For all Mr Horn knew, his neighbor was lying in a pool of blood inside the house from a crowbar beating. Mr Horn didn't have time to give them a quiz on whether or not they were stealing for their starving kids. In this country we have the welfare system for people who need it for their children. My father lived through the Depression, and unemployment and hungry families were the norm, but you could still leave your house unlocked. Honest, law abiding people will eat the dandelions in their own lawn, grow a garden, raise chickens, ask of their neighbors, ask for help at church...ANYTHING BUT GO STEAL OUT OF ANOTHER MAN'S HOUSE. Any fool who chooses a life of burglary should know that if he gets caught by the homeowner, the cost may be his life. While I too pray for the souls of those men who were killed, I especially pray for Mr Horn during this difficult time in which he has turned into a lightning rod for what is wrong in our society. Good people stand up to thugs, and are accused of racism and murder. Unbelievable but true. SAD. Added: Monday December 03, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST Right or Wrong? Who decides? After reading the many postings regarding the shooting in pasadena I felt i needed to post my own comments that i felt had added meaning during this holiday season. I am a ex resident of pasadena and my children and ex-wife still reside there. I fear for their safety all the time since i am no longer the protector of their home. It is human nature i guess as a father and should anything happen to my children i suppose i also would feel the need for some vigilante justice. However, not having all the facts here in this mans case i can only comment to what is known. I personally feel he was in no direct danger of his life or property and he did do the right thing by calling police and getting involved to let the criminals know good citizens wont ignore a criminal act simply because they arent the ones being victimized. However the justice system is in place to protect everyone. It is obvious to everyone that it isnt perfect nor does is it always fair, but to prevent good people from being falsly accused and improperly punished, our system holds that we are innocent until proven guilty. I know alot of you right now are saying "yes but they were obviously guilty", that is quite true they were caught red handed, but who decides their guilt or punishment. Should it have been this man with his gun deciding for himself that these people needed to die for a crime like burglary? Should any of you who have children ever face a day your child does wrong to someone else how would you feel if the person they wronged had the right to decide their fate. I can guarantee that every single peron who wrote in supporting this kind of thing would quickly cling to the american system of justice then and demand fair trial by a jury and what most of us feel is common sense punishment. I wouldnt want my child to face death for stealing. I would hope he/she would have a chance to learn from the mistake and make ammends for the wrong done. Its so easy for all of us to sit and take sides. Quanel x may be an extremist and i agree he is ,ranting about race as he did, however what makes us so different if we take extremist points of view on the other side of tha rgument? Keep them in their hood and teach them to not be theives. Wow what a bold statement to make from people who are doing what to try and change the world and make it better? Lets not be so quick to judge another man and what has brought him to a state of commiting a crime. I dare say a man stealing to feed himself or his children shouldnt be shot, yet with this kind of blanket justice where the individual gets to meet out punishment before any investigation is done or any trial is had what chance is there for any of us. We are all human beings walking this planet ,each of us having made many mistakes and had the opportunity to try and make right the wrongs we have commited. I beleive those two theives should have been caught and punished and more citizens should be involved but i do not and will not ever condone one man deciding justice for himself especially with a crime that in no way was putting his life in danger. He made a decision to take action in the most extreme case and is that what we really want to teach our children. that violence is the first resort. If something is happening you dont like or agree with lets just kill them so we send a message to everyone that we wont tolerate this. Why did those two decide to steal? Lazyness? Most of you are thinking they are just hoodrats and hopeless but if thats true why are they hopeless? Who in their community saw a need to do something before these two got to the state they were in at the time they robbed this home? Who stood up and saw a child turning into a troubled adult who would eventually become a blight on their community or someone elses. NOONE. thats because we all see with or eyes but we ignore. In a world were our planet is turning into trash all around us we ignore. We all see so much going on and choose to do nothing thinking it is someone elses job or responsibility to fix it and fix each other. No longer is this kind of thinking going to be accepted because the world cannot support the ignorance of it. We are all responsible for the tragedy that occured becuse we all either supported a way of thinking that encourages a man to kill another man and meet out his own justice or we ignore the criminals growing in our midst. We want to live life in perfect ignorant bliss and pray nothing bad happens to us. Your community and the hood that spawned these criminals as some of you posters have so eloquently worded it are connected to each other. My community is connect to the next and to the next one and next one and so on so we are all of us not seperate form one another but a microcosm of a larger community called planet earth. I would also like to remind everyone that its the christmas season. For us christians it is a time of joy at the birth of our savior who eventually died and if i am not mistaken died next to a thief whom he offered forgiveness before he died. Jesus's message regarding stealing was if a man takes away your cloak give him your coat also. Its a better thing to reach out and help those to learn not to steal than to convict them and sentence them to death. As a christian i pray for the souls of those two who died since they now do not have the chance to try and make right their wrongs and seek salvation in the lord. As a christian i pray for the man who shot them since he now has to one day face the lord for having made a decision of life or death that wasnt his to make. There are always going to be criminals and victims. I do not want to make people beleive i take the side of the criminasl but extreme justice isnt right justice. If the mans life was in danger or he was protecting a life i can understand but if its true this man was told to stay in his home so the police could handle this then he just decided for himself what these two individuals punishment should be. I pray he doesnt mistakenly decide one night that one of his neighbors coming in late at night locked out of his own house is a burgler and shoots him or her going through a bedroom window. If you dont think these things happen they do. I remember a man shot his daughter a long time ago in pasadena area as he shot through his front door without verifying who he was shooting. She died. When does it end? Who has the right to decide another mans fate for life or death? Do you? And what if it was you the decision was being made for. What if it was one of your children? All i ask is that each of you stop and think before you speak and act. Lets love one another and try to help one another and stand for one another. Jesus preached love not hate, forgiveness not revenge. This is the time of year we are suppose to be reminded of that. I pray you all have a great and safe holiday season. I for one will try and be a example for a better way to those who would harm me and i pray i never have to harm someone else. Given the chance i wont place myself in a position to have to kill another individual because i beleive every life lost on this planet truly does diminish me as a person. God bless you all. They would like everyone to try to meet @ Renegade @ 1:30 P.M. and Will depart @ 2:00 sharp Added: Tuesday November 27, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST community waych this wasen't a racist shooting . it doesn't matter what color they were, i bet he would have shot them even if they where white. i wish quanel x would go to his " people " before they get into trouble and explain to them the consiquenses they could face if they don't get a real job . don't come out and try to defend them after they commit a crime, teach them what NOT to do . Added: Tuesday November 27, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST Two men dead It doesn't matter that Horn was told by authorities to stay inside his own home and not go outside, he said "I'M going to kill them, and he did. He will get away with it. Thats Texas justice. They were black...He is white. Added: Tuesday November 27, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST Pasadena man kilss two seems that the local news reports these incidents the same everywhere. here in stockton, california the article by the associated press tells us of the 911 tape, however, in your paper it doesn't. the man is a murder. he premeditated the killing even though he was told by authorities to stay in his own home. against all advise, he went out to kill the two men. he should be tried and sentenced accordingly even tough the two thieves are minorities. texas justice should be for all alike. he will probably get away with the murders because he is white. Added: Monday November 26, 2007 at 01:50 PM EST Killing Over Property The police dispatcher told the shooter at least ten times to remain in his house. The shooter then went outside and killed two unarmed petty criminals. Those are the facts. I wonder if local religious leaders will remain silent in this incident. Added: Monday November 26, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST Support Mr Horn The unfortunate incident in your town has garnered national attention because what happened resonates with the average citizen through out our nation. I empathize with the dilemma Mr Horn faced. Thugs and criminals are fearless when attacking innocent people's, person or property because the legal system is a shambles. The criminal has nothing to lose.
Mr Horn is a good man and no doubt will have to defend himself and his actions. Mr Horn WILL have plenty to lose and that is my point. He is a hero, not a criminal. The thieves lose any rights when they choose to do wrong.
If Mr Horn needs financial help to fight the legal system, I will donate and encourage everyone else to ante up. Thank you Mr Horn on behalf of the majority of us who agree with you and refuse to lie down like lambs to the slaughter.
Karen Willis North Las Vegas, NV Added: Friday November 23, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST Quanell was on a rant in Pasadena when he should have been in the "hood" where these thieves were grown. Hey Quannell, dont raise theives and we wont shoot them!!!! Added: Thursday November 22, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST Elderly man shooting We Here in Brevard County Florida Sympathize with the old man for shooting these two scum bags , and hope there are no criminal charges against him. Criminals seem to be trying to take over and if good citizens don't protect each other who will? The police can only do so much. Just two days ago we had a home invasion down the road in which the owner was shot and killed. It time we as citizens protect ourselves and our good neighbors , Hope he gets off!!! Added: Thursday November 22, 2007 at 06:26 AM EST protecting honest people This was not a violent rage, this man was protecting his neighbors home while they were gone. I wish it was more like this everywhere because it wouldnt be as much crime and break ins. The 2 men that were shot were in the wrong. If those 2 were such family men they would have been at a real job and not stealing from someone else. They probably already had previous records of illegal crimes so they know they were doing wrong. This man is innocent he was protecting and thats the bottom line. This incident gives a whole new meaning to Community Watch. That community wont have to worry about breakins anymore. Let him be free. Added: Wednesday November 21, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST Innocent by SELF-DEFENSE It's a damn shame that people seem to have forgotten the right to bear arms, and defend one's property and life with deadly force! Try and take what is mine, or my family and neighbors at your own risk! I whole heartedly feel Joe didn't do anything that i wouldn't have done. Charging him is an "attack" on all civilian's rights to protect what is theirs. Git-er-done! Atta boy Joe! Added: Wednesday November 21, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST Quanel x Just because you are Black don't make you right................. If these men where breaking into your home , I bet you shoot them to... Don't be coming here and protesting racial comments,,,,, Mr. Horn made a statement to everybody who steals in are neighborhood. STOP OR YOUR DEAD !!!!!! This is not racial , This is a Man protecting his Neighorhood. I hope they got the message. GET A JOB... Get off Welfare, and stop using racial comments for an excuse to have a protest.... When you don't know the facts yourself. Added: Monday November 19, 2007 at 09:46 PM EST I Hope He Gets Off Easy!! Well they say that he had no business going outside and shot both of them. Well guess what ! the robbers had no business robbing peoples houses in the first place. We work our tails off to have something good in our home and to have someone come in and rob us! Damn straight , i shoot 'em too!!! Added: Monday November 19, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST The Lynching of Joe Horn An organized movement has appeared determined to deny Justice to Joe Horn. This man was a simple homeowner who was put in fear and defended himself. He has been called a "vigilante" on national television, he is not a vigilante, he is an American Citizen who has yet to be charged with any crime. He is innocent before the law.
Perhaps the other law abiding citizens of this area who really do not wish to be good victims might consider contacting attorney Tom Lambright (Joe's attorney) with the idea of a "Don't Lynch Joe" movement to counter the present wrongful effort that is being brought to bear for no other reason than Joe was afraid and defended himself. I would do the same and if you would perhaps we have enough in common to attempt to give Joe a level playing field. Added: Monday November 19, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST Those two thieves got what they deserved Isn't there a saying in Texas that says "if you mess with the bull, you get the horns?" Well, if you want to steal and break the law, and you get killed in the process--TOO DAMN BAD! Thieves are thieves regardless of their race (color). I'd love to have this man as my neighbor. Added: Saturday November 17, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST Right on brother I hope this homeowner gets a break. He did what a lot of us want to do but buckle under. At least this will send a message to the scum considering this neighborhood as ripe for the pickings. Why can't these people get jobs like law-abiding citizens. All we hear is talk that the Mexicans do the jobs that Americans won't do. I supposed these two dead rats were among those who refuse to work. Added: Friday November 16, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST Well apparently to what I was told from some one that was there said that the old man told them once to drop everything and leave when one of the suspects had a TV in there hands. And my friend told me it seem one suspect had a crowbar and was approaching the old man, so he shot them both. It is a shame that people end up so desperate for money that they are willing to break the law. Added: Friday November 16, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST Watch what happens. The shooter, while deserving a medal, will spend a fortune to defend himself and may end up serving time and/or probation for his actions. Our justice system has been turned upside down. Added: Thursday November 15, 2007 at 07:41 PM EST It is unfortunate that these mens lives were ended. It's a shame that while hard working people are at work to be able to afford nice things, others who dont want to work just think they can come and steal your possessions! It is a tough lesson learned, but I'm all for the Village Grove Crime watch! |
