Carducci has record night for Terriers

ROCKY HILL - Rocky Hill senior Dan Carducci wasn't aware of his record-setting effort Friday night in the Terriers' 40-14 rout of St. Paul/Goodwin Tech/Lewis Mills. He was too busy having fun, breaking tackles and knocking down passes.

Carducci set new school records for yards rushing in a game (253 yards), most points scored in a game (26), most yards rushing in a season (1,302), most TDs scored in a season (19) and most points scored in a season (130).
"The records are nice but to have a decisive win like we had on Senior Night was more gratifying," Carducci said. Rocky Hill improved to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the Nutmeg Football League.
Carducci rushed for a game-high 253 yards on 15 carries and 3 touchdowns, including a 92-yard romp, the second-longest rushing TD in school history. He also caught a 58-yard TD pass from Josh Esposito, breaking a tackle at the 10-yard line to score.
He also made his mark defensively. Twice in the first quarter, he batted away passes that could have gone for St. Paul touchdowns. "I looked up twice and the ball was in my face."
With the Terriers leading 6-0 in the first quarter, the Falcons marched to the Rocky Hill 6-yard line as St. Paul QB Brian Kaczynski completed five straight passes. Kaczynski, a Goodwin Tech student, completed seven of his first nine passes for 58 yards.
On first-and-goal, Carducci knocked down a potential TD pass in the end zone. On second down, he stopped St. Paul's Marcus Aiken for a two-yard loss. After two straight incomplete passes, St. Paul turned the ball over on downs.
Early in the second quarter, Carducci knocked Aiken out of bounds at the Terrier 19-yard line after a 36-yard gain. On the next play, Carducci again knocked down a potential TD pass in the end zone.
"He has great instincts as a football player," Rocky Hill coach Dave Coyne said. "He has a great work ethic, he knows the game and he works hard. The offensive line did a great job. They have him the room and it was up to him."
Carducci gave Rocky Hill a 6-0 lead after a 28-yard TD run with 8:36 gone in the game. The next time the Terriers touched the ball on offense, he broke around the end and sped down the right sideline for a 92-yard TD - the longest of his career for a 12-0 lead.
"The thing they do best is block," St. Paul coach Jude Kelly said. "They execute very well and with small, quick backs, they make plays."
A 22-yard pass from Josh Esposito to Fernando Sanchez gave the Terriers a 20-0 lead after Carducci ran the ball in for a two-point conversion. Esposito had a fine game in his second game as the starting QB, taking over after Bryan MacDonald broke his wrist.
Esposito was 3-for-3 for 78 yards and 3 TD passes.
Frank Carlson's 14-yard TD reception made it 27-0 and Carducci's 58-yard TD reception with 7.6 seconds left in the first half gave Rocky Hill a 34-0 lead at halftime.
Carducci's fourth TD was a 37-yard run with 53.4 seconds left in the third quarter.
Terence Thompson had 2½ sacks while senior Travis Adams had an interception.
St. Paul's offense was able to move the ball but its defense struggled to stop the Terriers. Sanchez rushed for 133 yards on 12 carries. Kaczynski completed 17-of-31 passes for 134 yards. Ryan Moore pulled down seven passes for 66 yards.
The Falcons (1-8, 1-8) were calling timeouts in the final minutes, savoring every opportunity to play. Rob Cannata caught a nine-yard pass from Kaczynski and Goodwin Tech student Winston Jones scored his first career TD with a 65-yard kickoff return in the final minute.
"We weren't able to make big plays," Kelly said. "If the defense can't stop them, it can get out of hand pretty fast. Still, we continue to fight and improve. I feel bad for the kids."
