RHINEBECK - A man described by his father as "always generous and helpful" was struck and killed by a car early Friday after stopping to help a woman who had driven into a guard rail.
Michael Egan, 37, who lived in the Dutchess County town of Stanford, died after being struck about 12:45 a.m. on state Route 199 in Rhinebeck, just east of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Egan had pulled over to help 22-year-old Sudeen McDermott of Red Hook after McDermott - who later was found to be drunk - drove her 2001 Honda Civic off the road and into a guard rail while heading east on Route 199.
Egan then walked into the path of a westbound 2002 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Jason Johnston-Riley, 27, of Kingston, and was struck, suffering fatal injuries, the sheriff's office said.
Johnston-Riley was not charged, deputies said. McDermott was charged with misdemeanor drunken driving.
"My son was always generous and helpful," John Egan said from his Stanford home.
"People who met him loved him," the elder Egan said, describing his son as a charmer. "His two stepbrothers, their wives and their children felt he was their brother, and he was the kind of person his friends rallied around."
Michael Egan was the husband of Stanford Deputy Clerk Meghan O'Connor-Egan and the father of two girls, ages 5 and 9, John Egan said.
He was vice president of information technology for Citigroup in New York City.
"He is my son, and I will never be able to see him or talk to him again," the elder Egan said. "I love him, and I hope everybody who reads about him loves him too."
Michael Egan was a 1988 graduate of Stissing Mountain High School in Pine Plains and played for its football team. He also coached a girls' soccer team and Stanford and played league softball.
Egan's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ on state Route 82 in Stanfordville.
