BEREA -- The offensive line, healthy for the first seven games and for most of the eighth, might be without both starting guards Sunday when the Browns play the Steelers for first place in the AFC North.

Left guard Eric Steinbach sat out practice yesterday with a back injury. He joined right guard Seth McKinney, who was knocked out of the Seattle game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury. McKinney did not practice Wednesday or yesterday and is not expected to practice today.

Teammates said Steinbach hopes to return to practice today, but coach Romeo Crennel is being cautious. He said Steinbach is ''day to day'' because ''backs are fickle.'' Steinbach twisted his back midway through practice Wednesday.

Ryan Tucker practiced at right guard and Lennie Friedman at left guard. Nat Dorsey and Isaac Sowells also practiced at guard.

Friedman subbed for McKinney last week and he played guard for the Browns last season. Tucker has not played guard in a regular season game in nine years, but he will be ready for it Sunday.

''Ryan looks like Ryan always does,'' Crennel said. ''Ryan is an experienced guy. He's played tackle and he's played guard.

''The thing about the guard position, particularly in pass protection, they are on you just a little bit quicker. At tackle, you take a little deeper set generally. But at guard, your set is not quite as deep. He will continue to work on his pass sets, but Ryan is a strong, physical player and he has good experience and knowledge in the game. If he has to play I think he'll do a good job.''

Peek sidelined

Linebacker Antwan Peek was held from practice because of swelling on his knee ... Starting inside linebacker missed his second practice this week because of a sprained ankle. The injury prevented him from playing last week.

Four Pittsburgh players did not practice. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring), linebacker Clint Kriewaldt (calf), safety Ryan Clark (spleen) and tight end Jerame Tuman (back) were held out.

Play it cool

Derek Anderson has taken his success so nonchalantly that one influential person in the Browns organization referred to him as a hippie. The reference was made early in Crennel's press conference yesterday.

At the very end of the 18-minute meeting with reporters, Crennel was asked what he thought of Anderson's personality.

''He's sort of like a hippie,'' Crennel said jokingly before answering the question. ''Derek is a normal kind of guy. If you sit down with him, he likes to laugh and he'll tell a joke every now and then. He's no different from you or me.''
