The Riverside City Council voted Monday night to pay rent and utilities on a room that would house a new city museum.
Council members said any agreement would have to be approved by their legal advisor, but that it would tentatively okay start-up funding for eighteen months.
Members of the Riverside Area Community Club, who brought the proposal to the council, reminded them that a city museum had been discussed for years and said that it was a good time to begin the project.
The museum, which would contain Star Trek memorabilia as well as artifacts from city history, is located in the former Kwik and E-Z building on First Street.
The rent would be $425 per month for 533 sq. ft., which includes water service. The city would pay for heat and electricity. Club members said they would use cell phones to reduce telephone expense and staff the museum with volunteer labor.
In other business, the council approved a RACC purchase of gift items for distribution at business conferences conducted at the Riverside Casino. The items include ice scrapers, letter openers and Hi-lighters with city insignia and a web address.
The city council briefly discussed restoring the log cabin located in Railroad Park. An earlier estimate had priced the project at $10,000, but council members said they needed details on the work before they could recommend any action.
The city council approved two building permits: one for a residential garage and the other for a commercial building at 1176 Commercial Drive for Robinson Homes.
The council discussed the need for a street light between Schnoebelen and Kleopfer Streets. Alliant Energy has a pole at the location that could be used if the city decides to request the additional lighting. No action was taken.
