For James, it's not done to fire up the hometown team. He's followed the Bronx Bombers since he was a youngster.
In a conference call last week promoting his appearance on "Saturday Night Live," James was asked who he was picking in the American League Division Series.
Of course, he picked the Yankees. It immediately caused a maelstrom of controversy in Cleveland.
"I didn't go with the Yankees," James said Monday on the first day of Cavs' training camp. "I've been a Yankee. It's not like I just picked the Yankees now that they are playing the Indians. You guys know I've been a Yankee my whole life. Nothing has changed.
"If the Indians were playing anyone else, I'd take the Indians. I want them to win. Just like the Browns. If they are playing anyone else but the (Dallas) Cowboys, I want them to win. It's as simple as that."
James attended one of the Tribe-Yankees games during the regular season at Jacobs Field.
"(The Indians) have a very good team," James said. "(Manager Eric Wedge) has done a great job. They won their division. They have great expectations. The Indians were a great team in the late '90s. It's exciting for the city."
