The World Council of the Cedars Revolution (“WCCR”) and the Reform Party of Syria (“RPS”) condemn Representative Dennis Kucinich for his recent visit to Damascus and to Hezbollah controlled areas of Lebanon. Kucinich’s visit further strengthens the tyrannical rule of Bashar Assad and is aimed at returning the Syrian Army to Lebanon and further destabilizing the nascent Iraqi Democracy. Allowing Syria to serve as a peacekeeper in a regional multinational force would be akin to the fox guarding the hen house.

The precedent of Syrian “peacekeeper” forces is well established and the results were disastrous. In 1976 Syrian armed forces, under the tutelage of the Assad regime, entered Lebanon as part of the Arab League’s peacekeeping mission to end Lebanon’s Civil War. Instead of helping to establish peace and foster reconciliation, the Assad regime caused further death and destruction by pitting one group against the other with the goal of establishing complete Syrian Assad regime control over the only democracy in the region outside of Israel and Turkey. Nearly three decades later, after turning Lebanon into a client police state of the kleptocratic “junior” Assad regime, UNSCR 1559 forced their retreat. Instead of finally establishing diplomatic relations with Lebanon and accounting for hundreds of Lebanese detained in Syrian jails, Assad has continued to assist Hezbollah and aid in the flow of weaponry and terrorists into both Lebanon and Iraq. That is the reason that so many Iraqi refugees have had to flee their country. All the while his Baathist regime has continued to violently repress his own citizens who have little freedom and risk their lives if they dare to oppose his despotic rule.

Assad deserves only the opprobrium of the international community not the praise of Dennis Kucinich. Mr. Kucinich should understand by now that Assad’s continued interference with the investigation into the assassination of the former Prime Minster of Lebanon, Rafic Hariri, his continued support of terrorist groups, including Hezbollah and his brutal repression of both ordinary Syrians and Lebanese are proof of his regimes guilt. In due time Assad and his protectors in Syria will be held accountable for their actions. After all of these well known facts, Kucinich sees fit to praise the Syrian government for its “sympathy” by hosting the refugees that it created.

Mr. Kucinich’s visit legitimizes the Assad regime that drips with the blood of its own citizens and the blood of thousands of Lebanese and Iraqis. Mr. Assad’s regime hangs by a thread and is now thrown a lifeline by a desperate Presidential candidate whose actions are imperiling the hopes and aspirations of millions of Lebanese, Syrian and Iraqis not to mention the brave US soldiers.

First off, when people start to accuse political leaders as being thugs with blood on their hands, we must first look at ourselves, i.e. our government. Think of Hiroshima, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, East Timor (how we turned our head to the genocide that was happening there). We invaded Iraq -- we've set off a civil war, and killed and injured (severely) hundreds of thousands of military and non-military people.
For him to vote against this 911 resolution, he has his convictions. Bush administration lied about the invasion, and no one with any real power is doing anything about getting justice for the troops who have died or been crippled or for the innocent Iraqis. Yes, we love their commitment and sacrifice. Unfortunately they're just pawns. EVEN if Bush didn't lie, just was misinformed, there were many great minds around Bush telling him NOT to invade.

Kucinich's nay vote is a statement of dissatisfaction with his Congress in their lack of a spine.

I recently heard Dennis speak in Florida and he had nothing but praise for the troops and the effort they are putting forth IN SPITE of the murderous occupation they are required to maintain. For 6 years the administration has done nothing to secure the ports or the borders. The have sent hundreds of billions of dollars overseas attacking a country that did not attack us. Should Iran pre-emptively strike our ships off their coast because of our threats?

I do not condone, if proven, ied's from Iran into Iraq however we tend to forget the arms we sent to Bin Laden to kill Russian troops and shoot down their helicopters in their Afghan war several years ago. Sees like whatever goes around comes around in these "Freedom Wars For Democracy"

Lets get the facts straight.

The war in Iraq was declared by our president. Under Constitutional law he isn't allowed to declare war, only Congress is. So first, he committed treason right out of the gate (He took an oath to defend the US Constitution). Then to add to the debacle, Congress did not challenge his un-Constitutional act and went along with it.

Catching you up to now, we know that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. And the president has admitted it. It's a war for oil. We were lied to about WMD's. 60 Minutes ran a story about Bush and his administration orchestrating the war the month he took office. He had planned to go to war with Iraq long before 9/11 even happened. 9/11 just provided him with an excuse. He somehow connected the two while people were feeling vulnerable and afraid he bulldozed in and did something he wasn't legally allowed to do. He counted on Americans being prejudice against Middle Eastern people and being ignorant of their Constitution.

So now the whole Country knows there were no WMDs and it's a war on oil, but Bush isn't finished with his personal mission, to secure the region and gain control of the oil fields so he keeps spreading the lie that pulling out would be a bad idea. Even though we know the whole thing was based on a lie. And we have lost over 3,000 soldiers to an un-American Unconstitutional war.

The American people last November voted a change in the Congress, because they did not agree with Bush's policy, but the Democrats stood in fear and did not try to stop him (what they were elected to do). Except a few lonely patriots, Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul. They have been apposed to the war from the start. The two men with the guts to uphold the Constitution no matter what the odds against them.

Actually, according to Article I, Section 8 of the US Constitution, in order for the United States to be at war, Congress must declare war. That action that was never taken by Congress.

I have found Dennis Kucinich to be one of a hand full of people in Wahsington-DC today that I truly respect. I am unsure what the visit to Syria was about, nor what he did in Syria, but if he is being slandered for this reason, my guess is that there is a secular Zionist skulking somewhere in the background. The anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor is not too far off. We went to war after that. There were fewer souls lost at Pearl than what were lost on 9/11. Now because of all the comforts we've enjoyed (I'm not forgetting Korea or Vietnam - by the sacrifices of our military we were safe here in our homeland) in between are we to act like sitting ducks waiting for the next attacks? Congress passes a resolution honoring the victims of 911. I'm sure that was a cold comfort to the families who suffered their losses. Its net effect: Zero-zilch-nada.. except to be used in this opinion as an acid test for Kucinich's patriotism. You take great pains to mention that the 130,000 or so troops we have in Iraq may not like it that Kucinich stuck by his guns, and you totally ignore the 1.5 MILLION Iraqi refugees now trying desperately to survive in Syria.

Dennis Kucinich was right to claim that the United States needs to pay reparations to the Iraqi people. Depending on the estimate, we are looking at around 1 million dead Iraqis and millions more displaced. The war was not authorized by the United Nations and the main reasons for invasion (WMD, links to Al Qaeda) were false. Thus the the war is clearly a case of "international aggression", which according to the UN charter is the highest crime committable by a sovereign nation. Aggressors have no rights, only obligations, so Dennis is correct to call for reparations.

What is needed in the middle east is some common sense, not the rabid hate and war mongering that many of your readers seem to favor. Believe me if Kucinich had no pride in America he wouldn't be sticking his neck out to try to salvage our reputation and security.
Prior to our invasion of Iraq, Al quida had next to no influence in that country but according to our own intelligence (groups like the CIA and NSA) since the invasion of Iraq by W in his zeal to become a war president (his stated goal to invade Iraq was announced years before 9/11, years before he was even president -- it's in his biography "A Charge to Keep") Al quida has been able recruit much more effectively in Iraq. Bush really screwed Americans with this stategy and I am ashamed that he is pretending to represent the will of this country. In actual fact less than 29% of Americans support his actions in Iraq. He can't leave office soon enough for me.

I agree with Congressman Kucinich. Isn't the millions paid in compensation enough to honor the victims of the WTC? Has there been a resolution to honor the victims of other disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Florida Hurricanes, the floods in the Midwest and the bridge collapse in Minnesota? We all know monetary compensation to the victims of these storms is sadly lacking. We have wasted enough funds in the occupation of Iraq to build a new home for each and every one. I know this personally I still do not have funds to repair my roof from 2004 after being hit by three hurricanes. Governor Jeb Bush simply turned his back on the hurricane victims of Florida and went off to Asia for the Tsunami photo-op.

Dennis K. seems to forget that the UN, Hans Blix, H. Clinton, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Germany, France, Russia, John Kerry, and most Iraqi Generals believed that Iraq possessed WMD. A bipartisan Senate committee, along with the 9/11 Senate inquiry, agreed that President Bush did not "lie" about WMD.

How is being against the war anti-American? Since when is it treasonous to exercise first amendment rights?

It's hard to argue the war was not begun on false pretenses (WMDs?) so I also find it difficult to accept Kucinich is the 'only one' who feels that way. Also, it is impossible to achieve any kind of lasting stability in the middle east with 'bombs-first' diplomacy. I'm eager to hear suggestions about how else to have diplomatic relations with countries like Syria if preemptive military action is everyone's first tool for constructing a house of stability.

Also, I'm curious to know if Nancy Pelosi and Condoleezza Rice "draped in shame" now they've visited Syria. For the record, Kucinich did attempt to visit Israel, the supposed counterweight in the area, but was unable to do so. He also visited Israel last year.

Well, let's see. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. Yet, the Bush administration adamantly and publicly insisted otherwise, and so a war that shouldn't have happened has happened and taken thousands of American lives as well as those from other countries.
The USAPATRIOT Act was written before 9/11. It was reintroduced and passed shortly after 9/11. Why would there be a need for it without a big fat terrorist attack to scare Americans into giving up their civil liberties? Many of them did so willingly, and still believe that we're better off with tapped phones, no habeas corpus, no fourth amendment rights, limited first amendment rights, while they wave the flag and talk about all the freedom that they supposedly have. It's become unpatriotic, or as some who have no real valid arguments might say, "deluded", to even find something wrong with this situation, much less dare to speak about it.

Mr. Kucinich is a brave person who stands up for what's right even when it might not make him popular.

It's a shameful and potentially dangerous thing when Americans (like the one who wrote this article, in particular) are so underinformed on the subject of what's going on around them.
