He held several patents on food processing machines including the first machine to make chicken nuggets. Johnson retired as president of Stein Associates in the mid 1990s and had remained a consultant to the company.
He was a member and past president of Plum Brook Country Club and played in its golf league. He served on the building committee of the YMCA, was a life member of Sandusky Elks Lodge 285, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2529 and AMVETS Post 17 and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky.
He was founding father of the Firelands Area Runners Club and was an avid runner who had run over 40,000 miles.
He was a 1939 graduate of Monticello High School in New York and received a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1952. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Mayo and USS Tate as a fire controlman 1st class.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Eleanor (nee Youngs); daughter, June Copper of Sandusky; and two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Anna (nee Doyle) Johnson; and sisters Margaret Anthony and Anna Mae Hanlon.
Friends may call Thursday, 4 to 8 p.m., at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Prayers there Friday at 9:30 a.m. will be followed at 10 a.m. by Mass in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave. The Rev. Philip Feltman will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
