CT's Wolves still unbeaten

The unbeaten Connecticut Wolves stepped onto the field Wednesday night with hopes of continuing their unbeaten streak and more importantly, walking away with their first ever berth in the US Open Cup Tournament. They accomplished both.

The Wolves defeated the Rhode Island Stingrays, 2-0, in the team's fifth Open Cup Qualifier in front of 583 rain-soaked fans at Peirce Memorial Stadium in East Providence, RI. The Wolves are now a glistening 4-0-2 on the season. The Stingrays fall to 1-3-1.

The game started slowly with numerous errant passes and miscues. Despite the poor play, the Wolves struck first on an Irasto Knights goal in the 16th minute. Following a quality build-up on the left side of the field, Bert Williams got behind the Stingray defense and gave a beautiful feed to Knights who was licking his chops in front of the Rhode Island net. Knights drilled it home for a 1-0 lead.

The erratic play continued with the Wolves still controlling the majority of play. In the 36th minute, Wolves midfielder Temoc Suarez slid a through pass to an oncoming Fabio Zuniga who took a touch and then blasted the ball past the outstretched arms of the Rhode Island keeper, Babou Gaye. The first half concluded with both teams battling for possession in the midfield with no scoring chances for either side.

The unbeaten wolves take their high-flying game to Montreal for a 4 p.m. match with the Impact.
