With three hirings Monday evening, the Panorama school board filled all remaining vacancies. Daniel Friedrichs of Ogden, who has been teaching at Collins-Maxwell-Baxter, will have middle school special education. Randy Miller of Russell was hired to teach middle school reading and coach junior high boys basketball. Linda Henning of Jefferson will teach half-time pre-kindergarten and probably will continue at the Raider Romper Preschool in Yale. Also, just retired Diane Meinecke will return as an alternative school aide. A wish list of items totaling $378,000 from a number of faculty and staff was approved except for $14,000 requested by athletic director Shane Arp for an underground watering system at the football field. The largest expenditure is $150,000 for two new buses with $37,000 for carpeting next. Financing will come from the School Infrastructure Local Option (SILO) sales tax. Book rent will go up $5.00 to $15 for pre-K, $25 for the elementary grades, $30 for middle school and $35 for high school and alternative school. Substitute teacher pay was hiked $5.00 to $100 per day. First reading was given to an anti-bullying /harassment policy. Non-certified and administrator salaries were raised four percent. A Pearson/ Scott Foresman elementary reading textbook was adopted. It will cost about $30,000 out of the general fund with a remaining $10,000 to come from a special fund at the elementary. A joint meeting will be held June 27 with the Guthrie Center school board with such items as the school calendar, sharing academics and a balance in open enrollment to be discussed. The Panorama board is not inclined to have its school buses go into other districts. The board felt the present policy of banning smoking in school buildings and vehicles is adequate. Merle Rambo of Facilities Cost Management Group gave an update on proposed new school construction. The board goals for school improvement were discussed along with the recommendations presented by the school advisory committee. A grant application will be made for a program for four-year-olds. Besides regular pre-K for five-year-olds, the school will be offering programs for three- and four-year-old regular and special needs students. Middle school principal Mark Johnston said parent orientation for incoming sixth graders to middle school will be held August 16 at 6:00 p.m. He has been working on scheduling as the middle school goes to block scheduling. Faculty member Megan Frakes has been working on a middle school reading program with specialized levels. The next regular meeting is Monday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m.
